Finally booked, but confused! PMS - PMDD

Hello to all! I am new to this and SO happy to finally have a surgery date!!! I am having a complete hysterectomy (uterus & cervix) because of excessive bleeding & blood clots for one week, every two to three weeks. I have suffered with this since I was 12 (I am now 35) and it has increased horribly after having a tubaligation in 2001. I have also been diagnosed with severe PMDD and have exhausted every medication possible. The surgeon is leaving my ovaries for now, in hopes that I will get SOME relief from the uterus removal, however, he has agreed, if I don't get relief, he will take them out once I have healed from the hysterectomy. Has anyone experienced significant pain relief (including back & leg pain) after removal of the uterus and even a slight relief from PMS and/or PMDD?

NattyC -

My surgery wasn't for that purpose so can't give you any advice. I included it in your thread title so hopefully members who have had the same experience will see it and reply.

Re: Finally booked, but confused! PMS - PMDD

Well nattyc,
My reasons are similar to yours for having the surgery. I have pelvic congestion and possible adenomyosis which is causing symptoms as you describe in addition to others.

I am having an LSH on December 1, and I am keeping my cervix and ovaries. My doc is cauterizing my cervix to avoid any further bleeding. She has indicated that keeping my ovaries will avoid having to take HRT which I did not want. She also indicated that I may still have PMS symptoms, but that for most people they are very mild compared to before.

My feeling is that I can deal with mild, I CAN'T deal with what I currently have.

I would discuss this with your doctor more. My surgery is only 3 weeks before yours, so I likely wouldn't have much feedback before you go in.

There are other ladies out here who should be able to give you lots of feedback.

Good luck with your journey. Keep checking the site and posting your questions. The ladies here have been wonderful in answering my questions.

Re: Finally booked, but confused! PMS - PMDD

Most women on the post-op board (from what I've seen) don't have a drastic improvement in PMS symptoms. Mine is better in some respects. I don't have that horrible pain and vicious clotting that kept me locked in my home 2 to 3 days a month. That makes me less PMS-y for sure. ;-)

Thank you SO much! I must admit, after spending the night last night in complete and total agony, the physical relief should make PMS much easier to cope with!
