which way does your scar run?
Hey sisters,
I am very new, to hystersisters AND the web. I have never chatted or posted anything before. I've been reading this sight for about two weeks now and am so glad I have this support!
Just now I found a posting that gave a web site with pictures of an hysterectomy. I wanted to look, but wasn't sure after I got started. The picture showed the incission going up the belly and not along the bikkini line, where I thought it was going to be. What is the "norm" for most Tah?
Amy Sue
Ps. I'm having my surgery on Aug. 12th

AmySue,
I think it may depend on your situation, doctor and possibly any previous surgeries? I go the 11th for a TAH also and asked my doc if a horizontal (bikini) was possible - he's okay with it. Not that I plan on wearing a bikini any time soon in this lifetime but I didn't want the vertical cut. I've also chatted with some of the more experienced ladies and they've reccommended it. Perhaps it's that little bit easier on the healing process?
I'm sure on of the other ladies will be along soon to offer more insight.

I think the way the cut is done depends on why you're having the surgery - it seems that a bikini line cut is more usual but there might be reasons to have a larger, up and down cut to enable the surgeon to have access. Depends on the need and the surgeon.

which way does your scar run?
Hi Amy Sue,
I have the vertical incision like the one you saw a picture of. My surgery was for a huge fibroid, so the doc was worried that with a bikini cut he wouldn't be able to see all of the blood supplies properly, thus increasing the risk of bleeding. They gave me the option of a bikini cut, but told me I could possibly wake up with an inverted T cut if they couldn't reach everything. After hearing about that possibility, I decided to go with the vertical incision to begin with, just to be safe.
I've also read from the ladies here that if you're having any kind of bowel or bladder work done, you most likely will need to have the vertical incision so they can reach everything they need to reach.
Good luck with your surgery.

which way does your scar run?
Hi Amy Sue,
I had a TAH/ BSO with Burch Bladder Repair and I have a horizontal (bikini) incision from hip to hip.
It depends on your circumstances, Doctor told me I couldn't have a TVH because of the size of my Uterus.
Good Luck To You!!

My uterus was too big for a TVH, too. I was told going in that I would probably have to have a vertical incision because of the size of my uterus. Fortunately, I got by with a horizontal. I, too, have heard that it is easier to recover from than a vertical.

re incision
Hi
I am having a vertical cut, as my surgeon has to unstick my womb from my bladder and bowel as it is all glued together with endometriosis adhesions.

I have a verticle incision. Mine actually goes from my belly button up!
I had a large large large uterus with fibroids - and that is the type of incision required to get up to all of it.
My Doctor did inform me of this and actually said I may have a verticle or horizontal. She said that it would depend how my stomach "laid" when I got on the table. I assume it had something to do with where everything was located and I assume she made the judgement call as to which incision would be best.
I am not a bikini candidate and am just thrilled to have the surgery over and no cancer - I really didn't care about what type of incision I had.
Although I know some people are much more concerned about appearances than I am.
Hope this helps

I had a vertical cut. Doctor said that he needed that to be able to look around to ensure that (if it was cancer) what was affected and what was not. Thank goodness, there was no cancer just a very strange fibroid. As far as I was concerned, whatever he needed to do to make sure I was ok - was just fine with me!

My two surgeries=same cut
Hi-
I had a myomectomy (grapefruit size fibroids) at 30 with a vertical incision because they expected cancer. They also did wedge resections on both ovaries. The incision was kind of, hmmm, lumpy? So when I had my son the following year, I had to have a Cesarean. They did the same cut, then 'fixed up' the incision so it is tidier and appears smaller than the first.
Now I'm 54 and once again they are going to be checking me for cancer. The doctor hasn't said what type of incision he will do, but since my uterus large and the mass is above the umbilicus, I expect it will be a 'hat trick' (three of the same). I'm hoping he will 'fix up' the incision so that I will appear smaller! lol
But overall I'm with the previous posters: whatever it takes to get the job done is fine with me! And my bikini days are long over. In fact, they have never arrived!
Good luck!
