Walking after surgery

Hi
Clearly, getting up and walking after surgery is super important, from what I've read.

I'm having abdominal surgery, keeping one ovary and the cervix. Lots of stitches.

So, when it is said to walk as soon as possible, does that mean walking from the bed to the bathroom or toddling around the block?

I don't mean later on, when getting back into shape, but for the weeks immediately following surgery.

Re: Walking after surgery

toddling around the house.... that is what i did for the first two weeks.... i was quite unsteady so i kept the dogs in their crates......

i really couldn't do much more than that... then right at the beginning of three weeks i started walking very short distances outside....

now i can walk 2.6 miles!

it will be 8 weeks for me tomorrow

Re: Walking after surgery

Toddling around the house definitely! The walking around the house (sometimes I had to pace) really helped with the gas the first few days after surgery. I took a couple of strolls around the block, but starting day 16 (and continuing) I am having that "normal" bleeding, so I am resting as much as possible. I quote normal because it doesn't feel normal. Good luck to you!

Re: Walking after surgery

I started with shuffling back and forth in the house, on about day 3 my friends said that I will wear out the carpet. I was doing a little bit more each day, trying to go often but not for very long.

I am thinking it was day 4 or so when I walked to the mail box with a friend. Shuffled to the mail box we should say. And then the day after that I walked a bit outside, and went from there.

Living on a big hill makes walking hard to start. So I drove to a nearby park and walked there from about day 10 onwards.

Re: Walking after surgery

Wednesday will be one year for me for my TAH hysterectomy. I was very sore and couldnt stand full upright for about 2 months after mine, but I had a vertical incision and 35 staples. I was tired and dizzy for awhile so I didnt wanna go for before getting back into bed..
