Stairs and pottty question

10 days
I don't remember having a problen after my c section, but this will be different. MY bedroom is upstairs, bathroom downstairs-it is one of those quirky older homes- how long before I can go up and down the stairs
Will I be going the bathroom a lot the first week?
I know I won't be comfortable downstairs-too much noise.
I could walk up slowly.
Anyone have any input??
Thanks

Re: Stairs and pottty question

I have a 2 story home my bedroom is upstairs after hospital i went to my room didnt come back down until a week but my doc said it was fine to go up and down for me going up i would hold on to the rail and go sideways somepeople go up backwards that felt awkward to me but sideways seemed to work real well with me. I didnt urine a lot actually i went less because fibroids caused me to go as a prego person.

Re: Stairs and pottty question

I had TAH and was able to navigate steps once in am & pm, with help from first day home. Like dotee, after fibroids had me running to rr every 15 min, this is so refreshing to not have to go so much. And I drink a lot of water! Good luck!

Re: Stairs and pottty question

I had a TAH BSO and I took stairs as well as our bedroom is upstairs. I just took them VERY SLOWLY. DH walked beside me to make sure all was okay.

Re: Stairs and pottty question

My LAVH was on 1/27/14. My GYN recommended that I avoid the stairs for several days. I have a two story home. After I came home from the hospital on 1/29, I stayed upstairs until 2/1 (a visit from my in-laws). More visitors on Superbowl Sunday afternoon, but by Monday, I was able to go up and down the stairs several times without any problem. I had my first BM after I arrived home, but urination events were every 1-2 hours for about a week; lots of fruit and water to help ease BMs.Just take it slow up and down stairs.

Re: Stairs and pottty question

If your loos not upstairs where you can rest comfortably is it possible to get a camping loo or something- just in case you really get stuck ? I'm at week five from an ab op and I'm only doing stairs 2-3 times a day - if I do more I feel it. The first week home I didn't do the stairs at all once I was up there - then just once a day for a coupla weeks. When I had my LAH in 2007 it was the same. Luckily I have a bathroom and loo upstairs so came down for sanity and company.

Hope it all goes well and you work out a solution.

Re: Stairs and pottty question

I saw those unisex portable potty bags in the store, I was tempted, but think I might find a bedside commode.....hmmm, considering options

Re: Stairs and pottty question

I was able to use stairs right away - had to to get in the house when I got home from surgery. I probably went up and down once or twice a day. And I did this with crutches because I'm an above knee amputee and didn't use my prosthetic leg for the first few days. Everyone's comfort level is different though. Seems like you may want some type of commode just in case you aren't comfortable with the stairs.

Re: Stairs and pottty question

I actually had diarrhea the first few days after I got home from the hospital from my TAH. I asked around on this site and that's not the usual reaction, but it's not uncommon either, so be warned! Also, I was carrying a lot of retained fluids which ****** themselves out in the first couple of days. I would have found it very difficult not to be able to access the toilet easily.

I went up and down a flight of stairs my 5th day after surgery and it was fine. I took it very slowly and used the stair rail to take some of my weight. But if I'd been in a hurry to get to the toilet and the stairs had been between me and the toilet, having to go so slowly would have been a problem.

A bedside commode might be a good idea, at least for the first week.
