Scheduled 5/2; questions and doubts
Hi! I have a da Vinci surgery scheduled 5/2 to remove one ovary and uterus. This all started 1/9 when my primary care doc thought he felt fibroids and ordered an ultrasound. Fibroids posing no danger and little discomfort but he said that the ultrasound showed that one ovary was at 9cm. Referred to OB who said that there was a smaller cyst on the other ovary as well, but that both looked like simple cysts. She ordered a blood test and I learned later that it was an ova 1. The level was 5.8 so I had to go to a gyn/onc. He said that because of the fibroids he couldn't really feel the cysts so he wants to remove one ovary and uterus. In his opinion, I have a 1 in 6 chance of ovarian cancer. My concern is this: NO ONE in my family has had a female cancer. All of my mom's sisters lived past 80. What we DO have in my family is cardiac issues and osteoporosis. So, I'm worried that I might be worse of post op than if I just let it be. The doctor gave me this litany of surgical risks and seemed surprised when I still wanted to decline the procedure. I did schedule it, but I am going in to talk with my primary care doc Mon and I suppose that I could stop anytime before they wheel me in? Of less importance is the fact that while I'm no Brittney Griner I run/walk 7-9 miles every Saturday, do a "boot camp" workout once or twice a week, and run or walk most other days. I feel like I'm going from athlete to invalid in one day and it doesn't seem right and I am afraid I'll never get close to where I am now (and all I seem to see is stuff about how important fitness is!). Plus, my job involves travel which means carrying luggage, but I know that the lifting restriction is in the short term. I have no kids, resigned to fact of not having any but that part is still a little emotional. Husband can help with stuff in near term but I don't want to be helpless for a long time if it is just not necessary...sorry so long! Appreciate all I have seen thus far on the forum.

Re: Scheduled 5/2; questions and doubts
Hi! I would suggest getting another opinion from a different ob/gyn if you aren't comfortable with what the other doctor has told you. Its important to have a doctor you trust and feel comfortable with and one that will explain all your options.
As for your job and working out, I completey understand your concerns. First, you will not become an invalid. I was able to resume walking in within the first couple weeks and back to strength training by week 6. I'm at week 9 right now and back to running as well.
I'm married to my job and was worried sick about it falling apart. Going back to work wasn't that bad for me. I had DvH and was back to work on Day 8. I do have a desk job but do have to lift on occasion. My coworkers have been great helping out with that. You will not be helpless. You'll just need some assistance for 6-8 weeks and it goes by really quick.
I hope this help some and I wish you the best wishes in making your decision.

Good! I'm glad I was able to help.
I have a kitty, too. And 3 dogs Love them! They will also be your BFF's during recovery. They took much better care of me than DH did.

Re: Scheduled 5/2; questions and doubts
Raven1964 Thanks again for your reply. My husband and I went to see my primary care doctor today. He is husband's doc and a family friend. He answered a lot of my questions about the need for the surgery (recommends removing oversized ovary regardless of cancer/not cancer) and also ordered a repeat OVA-1. If this one comes back not elevated, I'll worry less but proceed to the surgery anyway. He also allayed my fears about life after the procedure with good humor--he didn't laugh at me but approached it kind of like you do a kid who insists there's a monster in the closet--you can't laugh at him or he'll be traumatized but you know that there is nothing to be scared about. Thanks again for responding.
