Asking questions before you hyst is the right first step!
On this site, you will find women who feel that their hyst was the "best thing I ever did" and women who say "I regret it completely."
I personally do not regret my hyst at all; it was necessary for me, but I don't celebrate that I needed one either. You might consider sitting down with a counselor and discussing your feelings as you can have strong emotions associated with a hyst.
For some, a hyst does not completely cure their medical condition. For instance, a hyst is not a cure those of us who have endo.
It varies from women to women on how well we do after a hyst for endo. My SIL has had no problems in the 14 yrs since her hyst. At about 5 yrs post op for me, I started having a lot of pelvic pain. We have some women on the site who had pain return after less than a year post op.
Another thing that can happen is that other medical conditions can rear their heads. For me, I now know that I am Hypoglycemic, I have migraines, IBS, and Myofascial Pain Syndrome. My hyst did not cause any of these conditions, but because I crashed after my hyst (complications), all these "ailements" that I could ignore hit me full force. I know have to treat them as my body can no longer get by without me making changes to my life style, diet, etc.
Due to complications during a hyst, some women end up with additional medical conditions that they never would have had. There are pros and cons to a hyst, just as with any other major surgery, so the cons need to be carefully considered.
There are women who are so relieved that their pain is gone that they feel their hyst gave them a new lease on life. Living with chronic pain can affect your entire life and should be considered in your decision.
Have you had a second opinion? Have you met with an
endometriosis specialist or an endocrinologist?
Take time to search the site, research your conditions, and meet with as many medical professionals as necessary to decide what is right for you. Know that a hyst is a very emotional surgery so you are not alone in your concerns about that aspect.
I wish you the best and you decide what is right for you!
