Oh please let me poop!
I was so worried about my first bowel movement that when it passed smoothly I totally stopped focusing on making the next one comfortable. I've been drinking water and taking my stool softeners, so I don't know what I'm doing wrong. I've got the worst stomach cramps. Grrrrr.

Oh Dixiegurl!!
Try eating yogurt, apples, prunes...those 3 food groups helped me move along, with the buckets of water. If you are still on pain meds, that is probably contributing to the problem. Good luck! "This too shall pass, with difficulty, butt it will pass!" LOL
Hugs and love to you!

I ended up having my DH pick up some Milk of Magnesia and it worked within hours and worked wonders. After that I tapered off my medicine cause that really backs you up.

I feel your pain!! My first was a killer - thought I would literally pass out there on the toilet. As soon as I got off vicodin this has not been a problem though. While I was on vicodin - I took a dulcolax laxative pill every morning and within the day I would have "movement" - good luck. Seems this is one of the hardest things to get through.

Bless our hearts! I've never seen such a bunch of constipated women in my life LOL. I too am one of them lol.. I tried 2 teaspoons of epson salt and had a bm within 30 minutes. If you can stand the taste of it, it works just hold your nose lol.

I had a similar problem... (ie, initial bm with difficulty, and then none)...what else is new? I thought I was going to die...or at least that I wanted to! And I have been off all pain meds other than ibu since Sat AM. Called the on call doctor today, and luckily it turned out to be my surgeon. She had me do a Fleet's enema and I was in good shape in minutes. After seeing the size of my impaction, I know I never would have been able to pass that without assistance. You may want to call your doctor.

I was really lucky and they would not let me leave the hospital until I had a BM. Well, it took warm prune juice.......ehhh, and a suppository 3 hours later and that worked! At home, I am eating lots of fruit, Bran cereal, beans and taking my colace. I had some MOM last night just to make sure things would work! Only took half a dose and bingo away I went. The Pain Meds do not help the bm situation but I won't quit taking them until the pain is gone.
It is a balancing act, and when you find it hang on to it!!

Relief!
I was finally able to go this evening. Man, I thought I was going to have to put a cot in the bathroom. I think because I haven't had an appetite for nearly a week, I haven't eaten anything resembling enough fiber to help me work things out. At the same time, I'm probably not that backed up because I haven't eaten, I'd imagine. Boy does it hurt when you don't get out what's in there though!
I made a list of everything you all recommended, thank you Just in case!

A couple teaspoonfuls of flax seed meal sprinkled on your breakfast cereal does wonders and it actually tastes pretty good, too! Just be sure to use the meal--the whole seeds do nothing and come out looking exactly as they did going in.

Oh please let me poop!
I have chronic constipation, so I knew going in I would have trouble. I am taking Citrucel along with fresh fruit, prunes etc, but still have trouble.
PART of the problem is not drinking enough fluids. REMEMBER ladies, FLUIDS, FLUIDS, FLUIDS. They do help.
I have had a few days off and on with gas pains that hurt quite a bit. Due to my bladder reconstruction along with my TAH, I knew I could not sit there and strain.
There were many days before my surgery I would have to do an enema for relief. I have something that looks like a hot water bottle, but is actually an enema/douche bag. It has a hose and some different nozzles on it for different purposes. The bag holds 2 quarts of liquid when filled to capacity. You can find them at any drug store.
What I have done since surgery when I have had trouble with elimination, was to fill the bag with about a cup to a cup an a half of warm tap water. Use that as the enema, and it will flush your colon without having to sit and strain. I never fill it fuller because the pressure may cause damage to surgical areas...plus, if there was more liquid introduced into your rectum, it could very well cause MORE straining when the fluid reached beyond the point of offering simple relief.
I am 1.5 weeks post op, and have only had to do this twice, but it IS an option.
ALSO ladies, remember to bring your pillow with you to the bathroom. Hold it tight to your incisional area. You will not believe how much easier it is to have a BM that way. Lessens the pain of straining.
