How long before your first bm?

I had my surgery on December 1st. I have not had a bm yet, but am passing a lot of gas. The doctor seems to think that as long as I pass gas I am ok. Is this normal? Eileen

TVH with rectocele on Monday AM, BM Thursday AM after a 24 oz of liquid with a chaser of 20 oz latte. (4 days)

But my nurse at the hospital warned me that 5 days was more typical with a rectocele repair...

In my case it was almost a week before i had a bm but i was also eating very light....before leaving the hospital i was advised to use a stool softner

Just a little note here, my dr and nurses considered a bm any bowel movement, so it included passing gas. Depending on your diet, it can be a few days before you actually pass "matter"--I was on a liquid diet so although I did pass "gas" quickly, I did not pass "matter" for a few days until after they gave me solid food. My TAH was 11/17 and I didn't have a bm until am of 22nd. I had not had bowel prep prior and was eating light meals after surgery. I was passing gas after 1st day so I knew everything would work. I wouldn't worry. I did take stool softeners and ate high fiber cereal in the am. 1st one took a bit of time and didn't seem significant enough for the amount of time I was sitting there. Got better each time. The cereal we bought was Kashi Go Lean. I don't even use milk just eat it like a snack. Its quite good and works like magic within a few hours for me now.
