Bowel Prep Questions

Hello My Sisters,

I have a question about Bowel Prep.

It looks like I am going to be having a DaVinci Laprascopic Hysterectomy in mid to late August. Yippee!!!!

Only one hitch.. my doctorwants me to use GoLyte for bowel prep (I was so hoping for Mag-Citrate, but if GoLyte is what is required for the less invasive surgery.. I'll do it).

What my questions are involves the timing. I've never used GoLyte, so don't know how it will affect me.

I live about a 4 hour drive from the city I'll be getting my surgery in.. so I'm a bit concerned about using the GoLyte before driving down there.

For example if I do the prep on say Tuesday afternoon.. and will I be finished needing a bathroom every 20 minutes by Wednesday?

Would it be better to go down and get a hotel room and do the bowel prep in the city where I'm going to have the surgery?

There are stretches on the highway where there's no rest area or places to pull over for 20 or 30 miles. Also on the trip down there this past Sunday... there was an accident and the traffic was held up for at least 30 minutes.. I can't imagine having that happen and needing to find a bathroom!!!

Any hints or advice from others who have been in this situation??

Thanks!!!

Bowel Prep Questions

Hello, I am also scheduled for a da vinci lap hyster on sept.11. I also have to do the golytely. Didn't they give you paperwork with how to do it? I got a sheet explaining what time for everything. The nurse told me to mix it and put it in the fridge a day ahead of time. Then the day before the surgery at 3pm I take the reglan. At 4 pm I start drinking the golytely over a 4 hour time frame. They say to drink 8 ounces at a time every 10 minutes rather than sipping slowly. It says I can take compazine (another script) for nausea if needed. Also it says at noon the day before surgery I can only drink clear liquids before I even start the golytely. I hope this helps I am reading this off my sheet I got from my drs. office. Good luck!

Thanks Janelle,

My doctor's office didn't give me anything....not even a surgery date yet. I do like the doctor very much, so I'm willing to be patient with her staff. And I am a new patient to them and used to small town where everything gets taken care of right away..so I'm not sure what to expect from a bigger city where things sometimes can take longer.

Thanks for your help. I'll probably be calling their office sometime tomorrow to push for more information.

DressedUpInBlue,

The more I think about it.. the more I like getting a hotel room the night before. I also have to make a trip back down there sometime to get blood work done. Maybe that's when they plan to teach me about the bowel prep procedures.

It will all work out .. even if I have to sit on a pad of plastic and towels for the trip down.. (ewww) I'll get there somehow!!!

Hi again, I think you will be fine the next day for your drive. From what I hear this golytely is very fast working so you should be done w/ the bathroom by the time you have to leave. If I were you I would call and speak with the nurse and explain your situation. I hear sometimes people get enemas instead. I think I would rather avoid that unless I am already knocked out. LOL Good luck and hopefully you will get the answers you need.

Bowel Prep Questions

Good day ladies,
Actually, I prefer enemas... no cramping, but then again, it only clears the lower GI... so the chemical kind is a must. I had back surgery in 2001 and the bowel prep is just nasty. I'm definitely NOT looking forward to THAT!!! I am looking forward to being done with all of this. I've never heard of Golytely...... My husband donated 60% of his liver to his sister last August and I remember he had all these pills and goo he had to drink. He said the cramping wasn't too bad, is it like that?

When I had to do the Golyghtly bowel prep, I was finished with needing the potty by bedtime. I started it about 3pm, had to drink a glassful every 15 minutes. It tasted yucky but I rinsed my mouth with clear water each time & that helped. Remember to have some soft wipes handy.
If you would feel more comfortable being close to the hospital - the hotel sounds good. Do whatever will make you feel best.

I hope you get the info that you need soon. I like to know what and when to expect things too
