Weight Gain Post-Hysterectomy?

When I went in for my last ultrasound, I mentioned that I may be having a hysterectomy. The tech told me that everyone she knows who has had a hyster has gained weight - especially in the middle and were unable to lose it.

I gained over 70 lbs with my pregnancy. It took YEARS to take it off and I am still 10 over. I would really like to feel good in a swimsuit again, someday. The thought of more weight gain...ugh.

Curious - what have you heard or experienced in terms of weight gain post-op?

Re: Weight Gain Post-Hysterectomy?

FWIW, I did not gain at all. I've never had an issue with gaining though; I think that a surgery like this might magnify your existing tendencies. If you respond to feeling under the weather with eating, you may gain. If you don't or can't eat when under the weather, you will probably lose. I doubt there's one universal tendency for all people.

If you know that you have that tendency though, you can plan for it. Undereaters should stock up on high-calorie, nutrient-dense food to make sure we get enough, and folks who have a tendency to comfort-eat can keep an eye on that and make sure they have other things around to comfort or distract themselves.

Re: Weight Gain Post-Hysterectomy?

I actually lost 20 pounds from not feeling hungry due to feeling queezy after surgery. It was also a good opportunity to not eat as much as before. While in the hospital they only allowed me to drink apple juice for the first two days. Then after throwing it up all over the hallway, they decided to let me eat something with it. Couldn't eat very much so continued to lose weight. It's up to you whether you lose, gain, or stay the same. I have other issues preventing extensive exercise so losing was good.

Re: Weight Gain Post-Hysterectomy?

I am worried about this as well, but because the females in my family are a little fluffy anyways. I have talked to about 10 people face to face that have had this done and none of them have gained weight. Now if I gain weight I won't blame this surgery, but more my predisposed genes I was born with...

Re: Weight Gain Post-Hysterectomy?

No, haven't gained. Came home after surgery 4 lbs lighter, have never put it back. Got back to exercising after 6 weeks and lost a little more. I was already post-menopausal, which may make a difference, one less shock to the system!

Re: Weight Gain Post-Hysterectomy?

I honestly did not gain at all. In fact since my surgery I have lost almost 20 pounds I am surprised since lets face it, it aint like I have done a whole heck of a lot during my recovery. I am sure you will be fine.

Re: Weight Gain Post-Hysterectomy?

I initially lost weight because of a lack of appetite and complications. Once I was back on my feet, I went back to my normal weight and it has stayed that way for at least a decade. I'm now about 5 pounds heavier than I was in high school--so no big deal, especially since I am thinner.

Re: Weight Gain Post-Hysterectomy?

I'm already on the heavier side 5'5" and 170. I don't want to gain more ugh. I'm praying after my surgery I'll feel so much better and more energy after recovery to actually get my weight back down to 140! I'm also going to use this opportunity to reflect and eat lighter. Good luck to us all

Re: Weight Gain Post-Hysterectomy?

Ugh. I don't like blanket statements like that! I am looking forward to losing some # after getting rid of this enormous uterus and fibroids. I'm keeping my ovaries, so I won't be going into menopause yet, and I am not anticipating any weight gain post-op based on what I've heard and based on my own lifestyle.
