Is it normal to feel so good just a week after hysterectomy?

I had an abdominal hysterectomy (vertical incision) 9 days ago. Honestly, I feel much better than I expected. Of course my belly area hurts & I tire easy, but I told my husband, I feel like I could go back to work now. I've been resting & taking it easy. Not doing anything except walking & I know that's what I need to keep doing but because I feel so good I feel like I should start doing more. (Not complaining cuz I know this is a good problem to have )

We all heal at different rates . . . but yes it is normal to feel pretty good at 9 days post op. But remember with the feeling good comes the temptation to do too much. Listen to your body when it whispers to you . . . it will tell you when it doesn't like what you are doing. Rest is still an important part of your recovery.

Best wishes on your continued recovery.

Re: Is it normal to feel so good just a week after hysterectomy?

I felt pretty good my whole recovery, but at about a week out was when I really started to feel stronger in terms of stamina. If you feel like doing more things but are unsure, call your dr and ask if what you want to do is ok. My dr allowed many activities, my main restrictions were heavy lifting/exertion, bathing/swimming and sex. People here will tell you many things, but your dr and your body know the best! Don't assume that just because someone here tells you not to be doing something that it is correct.

Remember that people frequently post on internet forums because they are having problems and looking for answers, so you are not getting an entirely accurate overall picture. You are not reading about the many women who have uneventful problem-free hysterectomies, just get on with their lives and see no need to join forums like this one.

Re: Is it normal to feel so good just a week after hysterectomy?

I think a lot depends on what your expectations are. I had a TAH. Before surgery, I hoped that when I was released from the hospital, I'd at least be able to make it from my bed to the toilet and back. I figured that if I couldn't make it from my bed to the kitchen and back on a regular basis, I could put bread and apples and peanut butter next to my bed and live on that a while.

Reality was so much better that it seemed absolutely fantastic to me! By the time I got home (three days after surgery) I was off narcotics. I could go outside and walk around a two-block rectangle and enjoy it. I could sit upright at my desktop computer and I could also sit upright outside, where I read, sewed and played with my cats. I had a bit of soreness and twingey-ness but no real pain. Life was great!

Keep walking and ignore the housework. If you feel like you should be doing more, then walk more. *grin*

HysterSisters is a place where women support women by sharing personal experiences. No post or bit of advice is ever to be taken as medical advice. All posts are only to be taken as comments made by another women with a hysterectomy experience. Every woman is a unique individual who can fall from one end of the spectrum to the other. There is no "one size fits all" when it comes to hysterectomy recovery.

And never assume that because someone tells you to do something it is okay either. Actually, women are safer being more cautious than overdoing it. More damage can be done doing too much too soon. There are no awards for doing the most the soonest, healing the fastest, or grocery shopping the quickest. However, there can be complications. On the other hand, there are long term benefits to allowing your body the time it needs to heal and recover well without causing unnecessary complications.

When in doubt, women should wait until they can speak to their own physicians. HysterSisters.com partners with women and their physicians and does not take the place of the relationship between a woman and her physician.

(((TerriV))), it is AWESOME that you are doing so well!

You only have once chance to heal right the first time, so you are wise to continue to follow your doctor's orders for you so your recovery continues to go smoothly and there are no complications down the road.
