how long off work
I am scheduled for surgery on Sept 8th. My DR will be repairing my rectocele and cystocele and planning on a vaginal hyster. He said I would be out of work for 2 weeks, but I've been reading stories of other's being out 6.
I have a desk job and would really need to be back at work on the 16th of Sept to do payroll for the car dealership I work for.
Can I expect to be back at work by the 16th or should plan on missing more?
I will have my pre-op appt on the 1st.

Re: how long off work
I am getting a TLH. My doctor originally said about 2 weeks off as she thought I had a simple desk job (I am a technical writer) but when she found out that I write the operation manuals for very large tractors and have to climb all over them for information, she took me off for 4 weeks and we will see from there. I would go by how you feel, nothing else!! Sitting all day can be hard on us too, squishing everything. I would see if someone else can handle payroll just that one time, or if you could pop in and do that and then go back home and finish out your recovery. Best wishes to you, take care of yourself, you only have one chance to heal right and how you heal will affect you for a long time.

Re: how long off work
Hi Koko! Everyone is so different, so you will get all kinds of responses. I had a TAH and was out 10 weeks (some complications) but my sister and neighbor had TVH. Sis was out for 8 weeks and neighbor was out for 6. I haven't heard of anyone out for only 2 weeks unless it was a TLH.

You really have to consider the extra repairs you are having too, lots of healing going on!

Re: how long off work
With all the work you're having done on your body, I would anticipate being out longer than two weeks. Like Maize1964 said, you'll have a whole lot of healing to do.
As far as payroll is concerned, if, for example, you were out of the country on vacation, what would your dealership do to get payroll in on time? The same mechanisms they would use during that time is the same mechanisms they should use while you recover from your procedure.
My recommendation is that you take care of yourself. Trust me, if anyone at the dealership is interested in getting paid, the payroll issue will be taken care of while you're gone...
Good luck...

Re: how long off work
Great point mscleo! My job pulled the helpless act on me wanting to know how soon I could return after surgery. I know for a fact that they will survive just fine and when it comes down to cutbacks that this place pulls, I certainly wouldn't be given any special treatment. I actually had a coworker comment as if this is going to be some kind of vacation for me. You know what? I am taking care of me because in the end, that is what is most important. My job and coworkers are replaceable, my body is not!

Re: how long off work
Hi koko76
I also had a vaginal hysterectomy (without the extra repairs), and I went back just part-time at 4 weeks. Even this was pushing it. And I have a physically undemanding job that allows me to sit or stand or walk and that I could do partly from home.
At two weeks, I had just stopped taking pain meds (some are on for longer), it was uncomfortable to sit on any kind of seat for longer than 20 minutes, and I couldn't concentrate easily.
In my opinion, it is better to plan to need a full six weeks with the option of returning earlier if you're recovering smoothly and you feel up to it. You have one chance to heal right, and especially with repairs, you need to take care of yourself.
If you will be doing payroll again before your surgery, it is worth taking the time to write up the processing instructions step-by-step as you go. If it turns out that you feel up to coming back in, even just for a few hours, after your surgery, that's okay. But it would be upsetting to everyone if you planned to be back and then had a complication, or if you tried to come to work and couldn't manage. Not only would you feel bad, no one would get paid.
I had planned to return to some of my at-home work at two weeks, but my supervisor and I had agreed that it would make sense to put someone else in charge of my tasks on an interim basis. I can't tell you how wonderful it was to wake up one morning, realize that my brain wasn't ready to go back to work, and know that it was okay because someone else was in charge of my work.
Recovering from a hysterectomy and repairs will require you to

Re: how long off work
Thank you to everyone for giving me their advice.
My supervisor can do payroll because she is the one that trained me. I just feel like since I've taken it over earlier this year, it's my responsibility. I work on payroll from the 1st and pay on the 5th and the 16th pay on the 20th. That doesn't leave much time to had the surgery and recover in between.
My supervisor is wonderful though and has said what ever time I need off, she can do payroll, it's no big deal. She wanted me to hve it done this year since I've already met my insurance deductable.
I will be sure and ask my DR too.
Thank you everyone, you have been very helpful.

It sounds like you have a great supervisor! Take all of the time you need to heal properly. It benefits everyone in the end, especially you! Good luck to you!

Re: how long off work
I had LAVH/BSO 7/20. I went back to work after two weeks but I was really exhausted that week. The 3rd and 4th week I'm doing part time and it's very manageable. My sisters both had similar surgeries and took 6 weeks off work but they had short term disability paying them. I am self employed and needed to work.
