Exercise/Work-outs

On the day of my diagnosis for endometrial cancer (stage one) I had finally got my weight down to 108 pounds (I'm 5'2") and for the first time in my life I loved my body. It took me 51 years to develop a good body image and I couldn't even enjoy the feeling for an entire day! I have a good sense of humor, but this is stretching it a bit much! I love to go to core exercise training classes and yoga every day after work. It helps not only my body, but my mind as well. Will I EVER be able to return to them or will I lose all the flexibility and strenth I have adquired? Everyone tells me I should be grateful the cancer was discovered in time and not worry about the petty issues, but it's not petty to me. It was something that I loved to do. It made me happy. I haven't had my total hysterectomy scheduled yet, but I image I will have it within the coming week or so.

Re: Exercise/Work-outs

I love yoga, too. I'm planning on getting back to it after my hyst. Some of the disciplines are great for people with injuries because they are easy to adjust to what you can do physically. I would think yoga would be a natural first start to your exercising after they hyst...just check with your doctor to find out when it is safe to begin.

Re: Exercise/Work-outs

Yes, you will gain back full flexibility and strength, but take it at your body's recovery pace and on your physicians recommendation, take everything slowly and don't rush anything.

Re: Exercise/Work-outs

RegsLady: Thanks for your reply. I have an appointment with my surgeon on Friday and hopefully I'll have a procedure date for next week. Good luck with yours and I hope we both get back to our down dogs and sun salutations soon!

Still Suffering: Hopefully your name is no longer accurate and you are doing better after your procedure. You gave me some support and I can sure use it. I'll take your advice and hopefully I'll get back to the some of the things I love soon. Thanks!

Re: Exercise/Work-outs

It is not a petty issue if it is bothering you. I was really out of shape before my surgery & I have just started on the WiiFit. I am doing the sun salutation too I am taking it very slow but I am enjoying it a lot. I have about 40 pounds still to loose. You will need to take it easy for a while after your surgery so your internal stitches all can heal correctly but after that I am sure you can get back to were you want to be. You will only have once chance to heal correctly so make sure you listen to your doctor & your body & don't push it too fast. Best wishes to you!

Re: Exercise/Work-outs

Saridah3 I'm sorry you were unable to bask in the joy of a hard earned achievement for at least a day. Have you considered the fact your weight and level of fitness is the best it has ever been and will probably help you get through this health crisis well?
I do not see any reason why you should not expect to be able to return to daily exercise program again. It may take time and require modifications at first but you have already done the hard part. Adopting the lifestyle. Speak with you doctor what level of activity you can continue during your post surgical rehab and treatment period.
You sound like a great lady. Hang in there. I wish you a successful surgery and a speedy complication free recovery

Re: Exercise/Work-outs

Hope:

Thanks for your support. When I have this operation (hopefully next week) I'll be going through so many physiological and psychological changes. It's hard to give up everything, even if it's just for a while, and focus on only healing. Your kind words were very helpful.

Thanks for the good advice. I will be careful to heal and I hope all of you are right and that I can eventually go back to enjoying my gym classes. I will keep you posted after my surgery. I appreciate your comments very much.
