mood swings, hysterectomy after menopause

I would like to know if anyone has experienced mood swings after a vaginal hysterectomy and have already gone through menopause. I am almost 3 weeks post-op, getting out and feeling better. But I am suddenly out of control of my emotions. The holidays have been very depressing for me and I'm crying a lot. My dr. told me there shouldn't be any emotions since I've been past menopause for over 2 years. Just wondering if anyone else has experienced this. My ovaries have been left but dr. told me uterus wasn't producing hormones and it shouldn't have a problem.

Re: mood swings, hysterectomy after menopause

Just my two cents here:
I think sometimes doctors get hung up on "only what is scientific" or "only what can be proven." As much as I really love my own doctor, she does it sometimes too. The "physical, mental, and emotional" are completely connected. That has long since been proven. Sometimes when they don't see a "perfect or logical" connection, they tend to dismiss things. That's really a shame. Who can really tell whats going on with your body. You are still pretty fresh out of surgery. I would give yourself some time. While I am not where you are (I had a SAH and I am not in menopause and have one remaining ovary) I just wanted to reply and say that I hope things improve for you! Post back at some point and let us know how you are doing!

Re: mood swings, hysterectomy after menopause

Kgflick1, I was post menopausal at least 10 years when I had my hysterectomy this past summer. I had days of crying and terrible mood swings as well. I also had some night sweats. The night sweats were pretty early on but the emotional part began between 2-3 weeks. I cried a lot and was just miserably depressed feeling. I leveled back out about 6 weeks. No hormones. I hope you feel better soon. I just wanted to let you know that you are not alone. This was a major surgery and upsets us in ways that we weren't expecting. Hugs to you.

Re: mood swings, hysterectomy after menopause

Here's something I guess your doctor thought maybe you would be able to avoid, but the fact is that even though you are in menopause, the ovaries are still doing something. They are still producing hormones, just at a level too low to cause menses. So those ovaries were probably giving you a bit of estrogen, and now you are having estrogen withdrawal. It is absolutely possible to go through menopause twice. The following article may help explain: Surgical Menopause after Natural Menopause. If it gets bad, a little HRT for a while may help.
