Hi i am new here and was going to have a hyst on july 29 untill my insurance denied me. They wanted my doctor to do a lap first. I had that done 4 days ago and she took pictures of my uterus to send to the insurance com. I pray they say okay this time. There is nothing supporting my uterus because everything is really streached out and is causing me so much pain. I dont know how much more i can take. Has anyone else had insurance problems? I would to think there is a end to this pain and bleeding.

You aren't the first person to have to try alternatives first to satisfy an insurance company and I'm sure you won't be the last.

As unfair as it may seem, insurance companies have the right to request that other treatments be tried before they ok surgery, unless your DR can convince them that the condition is too advanced. If you review your program documents you will see that.

I have never worked for an insurance company, and I never plan to, but in their defense - if you read your agreement with them they have the right to be sure that elective surgery, such as a hyst, is the last medical treatment that there is. Unless cancer is suspected a hyst is elective surgery. If it was entirely the bottom line they were worried about, they would say yes to every hyst before any other treatments were tried. The fact is they do get blamed for unnecessary hysts, some hysterectomy opponents say they are too quick to give the ok.

There is concern that in the past way too many unnecessary hysts were being performed without giving alternatives any thought at all. The medical community came under fire for that, and it can be said that the insurance companies are responding by making sure that a hyst is the last alternative.

Now that your DR has done the lap hopefully it will satisfy them that your surgery is the final treatment available.

Hi dinky creek

Welcome to Hyster Sisters!!

While I'm sorry that you are facing possible surgery, I am glad that you found us and posted to introduce yourself.

Many insurance companies are very cautious about approving a hysterectomy until and unless all other possible procedures have been tried first. You didn't say what other procedures you have already tried, and since a hyst is major surgery, and may bring on other problems, post-op, it's never wise to rush into one, unless it's to save your life. Since most hysts are done to improve the quality of life, not to save your life, you've got time to be sure that a hyst is the answer in your own particular case.

You might want to read some of the articles in our Resource Forum (click here) while you're waiting to hear from the insurance company again.

Please keep on reading, researching and posting any other questions that you may have - we'll do our best to help.

I had the same problem! I was scheduled for surgery 5/12 and they said they wanted the dr to do a DNC first. Then 3 days after the DNC they reconsidered and authorized me. I had my surgery last Monday, and everything went great and is going fine! So keep up the faith! I wrote a letter to the insurance co and told them what I have been through for the last 10 years. Their big concern was being so young (33), but after writing the letter and having the DNC they finally said ok. I also made a point to put in there that I don't want any more children - that seemed to help too.

I hope this has helped you! Forgive my typing, I'm on a lap top and it's a little different way of typing!

Good Luck!

I hope the best for you in getting the proper treatment!!

I can see both sides, you want to be done with the suffering you have endured, and they want to do the least invasive and expensive treatments first. I wish you luck, and hope that whatever outcome you do have is desirable to all parties.

It actually scared me when my insurance company didn't bat an eyelash about my hyst -- I am 23 -- it makes the seriousness of my diagnosis more real.

Best of luck, my thoughts are with you.
