Post hysterectomy pain about an inch from right hip - UPDATED - ANSWERS: hematoma, infection and UTI
I had a total vaginal hysterectomy 2.5 weeks ago. (still have my ovaries) I am having a constant pain about an inch in from my right hip bone. And it penetrates towards center. I also get these terrible shooting pains that take my breath away. Gyno nurse said I shouldn't be too concerned and if it gets unbearable to be seen. I am wondering if anyone experienced similar pains and if so, what helps? Thanks.

Re: pain in about an inch from right hip, 2.5 weeks post op
I had LAVH 4.5 weeks ago(kept ovaries also). I have some tenderness in my hips also. Not really painful, but I put a pillow on my hip when sitting in chair so my arm isn't right on my hip. Seems to help. I also had some shooting pains but they've seemed to subsided. I was using heating pad in conjunction with pain reliever (Ibuprofen, Aleve or Tylenol). Seemed to help. Good luck!

I had the shooting pains also. Nurse told me it is nerve / tendon pain and it meant I had done too much and sure enough every time I overdid (even if it was just sitting up for too long or being in the car too long), they came back. When you have them, try to rest the next 24 hours as much as you can (lying down as much as you can) and they should subside. At least mine did. (Though I am recently having them again which is why I was logging on.)

Re: pain in about an inch from right hip, 2.5 weeks post op
Oh God love... I am 3 weeks post-op this Tuesday the 11th and I have the similar pains so I would get into total relaxation mode and have the heating pad close by. Our bodies have been through a very traumatic experience and we have got to let it heal and just take it super easy and with time and love and support we will make it through.
And yes-Stay ahead of the pain.
Prayers for you my sister always
Your friend,
Rita

Re: pain in about an inch from right hip, 2.5 weeks post op
I am almost 2.5 weeks post LAVH, and have been having similar pain in both left and right sides- worst in my left... Quick, sharp shooting pains and then adeep ache in the same area. It is somewhat comforting to know that I'm not just being a big baby (which is definitely how I'm feeling the days), since unfortunately so many of us are experiencing a similar sensation. It can be a bit defeating at times! Please let me know if you get any ideas on what it might be other than nerve/ligament pain (which seems right). I find that a little upright walking, and then laying or reclining with my back on a heating pad and either another heating pad or an ice pag on my hips/pelvis helps... Along with Advil and the Tramadol I'm still taking.
Hope it helps a little to know you aren't alone.

Re: pain in about an inch from right hip, 2.5 weeks post op
I had them so bad in the middle of the night once (about 3 weeks out) that I woke myself up yelling "ouch!!". I had been out driving the day before - way too long apparently.

Re: pain in about an inch from right hip, 2.5 weeks post op
thanks ladies. it does help to know that I am not alone! I am currently just using motrin, which doesn't seem to work that well, but I know I cant stay on the strong stuff forever. I have too woke myself up in the middle of the night screaming ouch. I don't want to seem like a baby, but gesh it hurts!! I have been staying in bed a lot and not overdoing it at all. that is why I am a bit concerned. the ligament and nerve pain makes sense, I was not told about that. i always have a dull radiating pain from both sides, but the shooting pain seems to come from the right side. i had used the ice packs while in the hospital, but have not used anything since being home. i will for sure get the heating pad out now! thanks for all support. this is my first post and i am so glad i found this website! thanks!!!

ANSWERS to my pain
surgery was on feb 20th. I am typing this to let you know to listen to your body and let you know what my symptoms were and what they meant.
today is day 19. have been having terrible shooting pains for about a week. day 6 post op, I started to bleed. I bled for 5 days and then started the stinky brown discharge (ick). kept in contact with my gyn office. spoke with nurses to make sure this was nothing out of the ordinary. they reassured me that this was normal and that if it made me feel better, they would see me. I opted to just tough it out and wait for my 4 week appointment. last night I was in so much pain that I almost passed out. I basically chewed 2 Percocet and laid down. I was in tears. never experienced this type of pain before. this morning I called and my gyno office squeezed me in. I had blood work and urinalysis done. he did an internal exam. It was so painful, once again I was in tears. well, he said I had an infection due to a hematoma that burst (bleeding 6 days post op) and then became infected. the discharge and smell is normal, but not to the extent of mine. I also have a UTI. Nothing that I did caused this. It just happened. He put me on an antibiotic, antifungal (to prevent yeast infection) and more Percocet. I am still in pain, just laying in bed with heating pad on pelvic region. I am trying to stay positive, but this is so painful. I know things will get better, just wish I could be more present for my family. im going stir crazy.
