Normal timeframe for the exhaustion to resolve?
I am 9 days post textbook TVH keeping ovaries and tubes. I am still fighting major exhaustion and want to know when this starts to get better after a surgery such as mine. Does anyone have an idea or range of time that I should start to regain my energy? Being down for 9 days has been really tough on me mentally and also on my family. I just need a light at the end of the tunnel I guess.

Re: Normal timeframe for the exhaustion to resolve?
I am 3 months out from DVH, kept ovaries and tubes. I don't want to scare you, but I still get exhausted very easily and very quickly. I was in decent shape before this, and very active. It is very frustrating to still not be able to do everything I want to do, when I want to do it. You have to pace yourself and give your body a chance to heal properly. I have heard that it takes 6-12 months to heal completely. I can walk 45 minutes and feel good, but if I lift anything over 10 pounds, I still have some awkward cramps/pain. We had some major parts removed, and the remaining parts are re-adjusting and recovering from the trauma of being detached. They are finding their new spaces to settle into. Best Wishes.

Re: Normal timeframe for the exhaustion to resolve?
I am 7 weeks post op and back to work half days... I had everything removed due to precancerous cysts and fiberoids. I still get tired in the afternoons and when I take a nap I have issues sleeping at night. I heard the same thing that it takes 6 months to a year to completely heal. Hope the exhaustion thing goes away before that too. Hope you feel better soon. Take it nice and slow and don't rush things... I have learned that since my surgery.

Re: Normal timeframe for the exhaustion to resolve?
Thought you might want to hear from the other end of the spectrum of recovery experiences. I had a TAH/BSO almost two months ago. I had a really easy recovery. During the first week, I needed naps during the day time, but not after that. I went out for longer and longer walks every day. When I got home from a walk, I would do something low-activity for a while (reading, sewing, working at my computer, etc) but I wouldn't say that I felt "exhausted." I added steep hills to my walking repertoire during the third week, which also expanded my geographical range.
At four weeks I was going for 1-2 hour hikes on wooded trails. My gyn onc cleared me to return to work, walking, cycling, swimming, etc. At six weeks, I could lift heavy boxes, use my rowing-type exercise machine and basically do everything I did pre-op. Life's back to normal.

Re: Normal timeframe for the exhaustion to resolve?
Almost 3 weeks since my total abdominal hysterectomy.......I'm taking a lot of supplements...I feel good. I think post op time should be littered with patience. Be gentle to yourselves. I found there is a direct correlation with your age at time of surgery. I also get my strength through prayer..

Re: Normal timeframe for the exhaustion to resolve?
Thanks for all your replies. I'm especially happy to hear about yours surprisedinNB! I am going to try and start taking walks etc. I'm an athletic and young 38 year old and am optimistic I can be on the shorter end of the recovery spectrum now that the constipation set back is resolved. I think that having basically diarrhea for a few days while on the laxatives really threw off my electrolytes. Crossing my fingers! Good luck to you all!

Re: Normal timeframe for the exhaustion to resolve?
I'm 55. *grin* I've found in previous recovery experiences that an appropriate level of physical activity - whatever that is in a given situation - definitely helps. My body seems to do better when it knows what's expected of it.
I think you're right re: the electrolytes, too. Also, have you been getting enough fluids? Diarrhea's dehydrating.
Good luck!

Re: Normal timeframe for the exhaustion to resolve?
Go easy on yourself, you are still very early in your recovery. I know that you want everything to be back to normal right now, but just be patient. One of the hardest things for us to do is to be still and taje it easy because we feel we should be doing more, but taking it easy is exactly what we need to do.
My recovery was fairly easy, but I still got tired at times. Sometimes the easiest of tasks were exhausting. My energy level increased gradually and yours will to. It won't happen overnight, but it will happen. Day by day, little by little. Don't try to go all out. Increase your activity a little at a time. Dont rush things. Listen to your body and let it heal. So hang in there. You will absolutely get to where you need to be when you need to get there.
