Nausea and vomiting

I am allergic to strong pain meds and tend to have severe nausea and vomiting after surgery. I always tell the Anesthesiologist but have yet to not experience it. Any tricks or suggestions?

Re: Nausea and vomiting

They gave me a patch for behind my ear to help with nausea.
Maybe ask for one?
Best wishes to you on 10/4!

Hey beautiful girl, :friend.
I'm so sorry you have such a bad reaction from the surgery and usually they should be able to account for that, especially since you've told them about it. Please keep pointing it out to the anaesthetist as strongly as possible that you DO react and that it is quite distressing for you and can they at least administer something straight after or when you first wake up to help you as quickly as possible.
I pray that this time you will be as comfortable as possible and wish you the best of luck for your up and coming surgery and happy healings.
God bless you and hugs galore, xoxo.

Re: Nausea and vomiting

My pre op app this time they had it noted in my chart/records (I've only ever gotten sick post op once, thankfully) so they put it in bold red letters to give me something before I wake up. And they must have cause I woke up fine. I have only been nauseous twice since surgery and once was because of a long car ride and being overly exhausted and the other was because I drank an Icee. Lol. Sprite was my cureall those times. I would definitely mention it to them at pre op and the morning of surgery before they wheel you back.

Re: Nausea and vomiting

Depending on the type of surgery you have and how extensive it is, they can consider a different type of post-op pain medication. Instead of opiates in a drip, I had an On Q Painbuster which is a ball with local anaesthetic which goes direct into the surgical area through a small tube. The local anaesthetic drips directly onto the internal wounds and blocks pain that way instead of by a medication which affects the whole body. It is much less likely to cause nausea. I found it really effective. I had it for 2 days. I think they can go for longer. After it was removed they gave me Endone but it gave me weird waking dreams and I couldn't sleep so I coped with only over the counter meds after that. Good luck

Had a gallbladder laproscopy and they gave me something in my IV drip. I made sure to tell the anesthesiology doc about it again right before the surgery and I made sure it was noted on my chart at pre op and told every nurse that I came in contact with .

For the LSH as it was at a different hospital the anesthesiology nurse was oh I give you a patch behind the ear, I made sure she would also give me something in my drip and this made a world of difference

But here is the bad part, after the surgery I had only crackers and a sprite, not eaten much of it, was in a lot of pain (well compared to the gallbladder surgery) they gave me more morphine (I was kind of shocked later no one told me I would be on morphine , afterall it was an outpatient surgery) and then the RN gave me a lortab, I really think that combination is what did it, because that actually made me throw up. So just a word of caution here
and my best advise tell everyone you come in contact with to give you something in your IV Drip.

Good luck to you

Re: Nausea and vomiting

I had two surgeries, a diagnostic lap and then a csection that both made me violently ill. Two years ago I had an appendectomy and endo removal and the anesthesiologist metbwith me pre op and asked if I had ever been sick after any of my other surgeries. I said that I had, unfortunately. He said, and I quote "I will make certain that doesn't happen this time" and he was true to his word! I didn't get the patch behind the ear, but I didnt get sick, not even a wave of nausea. In fact, when I woke up, I was wide awake, I didn't nap until it was time for "bed". I don't know what he did but I found it to be a beautiful and perfect thing!! I hope your anesthesia doc prevents you from getting sick, just be sure to speak up!! (((((Hugs)))))
