Going home 5 + hours after surgery ~ Too Soon?

I'm having surgery this thursday, and I am allowed to go home after 5 or 6 hours. It's considered outpatient. I'm only having my uterus and cervix removed, but my surgeon said I could go home if my husband is there with me. This does make me really nervous after reading the posts of others. Has anyone left this soon?

Re: Going home 5 + hours after surgery ~ Too Soon?

Hi! I got to the hospital at 5:00 am on Friday Aug.6th. My LAVH started at 7:15 am. I was in recovery by 10:00 and taken to a room. I spent the day with a catheter and IV pain meds. Slept a little and ate some soup and crackers. When my blood work came back at 4:00pm I was released to go home. I was literally home by 5:00 pm! I really was okay. My 1st night sleeping was not very good. Hubby woke me up every 4 hours to give meds and help me to the bathroom.Your doctor won't send you home if he/she doesn't think your ready. I am 3 weeks post-op and feel pretty good! I hope this helped Your in my thoughts and prayers.

Re: Going home 5 + hours after surgery ~ Too Soon?

I had mine done laparoscopic. They had already removed my ovary and tubes in may. My surgery was at 9 am and I got to leave the hospital the next day at 6 pm. I couldn't have left the hospital the same day. How is this going to be preformed?

I know its done, but they'll keep you if you're not ready. I had too much nausea so they kept me, then I couldn't empty my bladder well enough, so it was 24 hrs. But if you can eaT, take oral meds, pee, and walk, you will be OKd to go. Just be sure to be up walking frequently. Best wishes for your surgery.

Re: Going home 5 + hours after surgery ~ Too Soon?

It sounds scary to think they may be releasing you too soon. However, I think if you are not feeling comfortable about it, perhaps you could ask your doctor?

I know for them this may all be routine, but remind your doctor that this is your first time, and you are feeling apprehensive. A good physician will recognize that, and discuss your options.

Also, if you have a good support system at home, my friends have shared that home is a lot more "restful" than the noisy hospital!

Good Luck!!

If I were you, I'd milk it for as long as your insurance company allows. I'm not scheduled until Oct. 13 as an outpatient, but I'm allowed to stay up until 23 hours once leaving the recovery room. Every person will respond to surgery differently, so it's really your call. But for me, I'm planning on taking my sweet time.

Re: Going home 5 + hours after surgery ~ Too Soon?

I imagine I could have left the same day, but I had a spinal with my general anesthesia, so they had to monitor me. Like the other women, I don't see them letting you go home if your body hasn't shown you are ready to go. And make sure you voice your concerns with your doctor. Outpatient is any time under 24 hours. At least that's what I was told. Good luck, and you'll do great!
