Tummy bumper?!
Hi, I'm now just over 4 weeks post-op (TAH) and a thought has occurred to me when I've been on a few trips out. Is it just me or does anyone else feel like they could do with a "tummy bumper" to give them some protection around the tummy when they are out in public or crowded places?
I was out with my sister and two nieces and their new puppy one day - when we got out of the car, the first thing the dog did was jump up to say hello to me & put her paws on my abdomen - ouch! Then last week I walked to the local library and I was standing next to a lady with her little grandaughter in a push chair. The child threw her book up in the air and guess where it hit me - yes, right on my tummy! Yet I was the one apologising for the fact that I didn't crouch down to pick it up for her, because I would struggle to get up again without a bit of support.
Does the Swelly Belly Band provide this kind of padding or is it intended more for itch relief and comfort? Maybe the Tummy Bumper hasn't been invented yet - it could be something like the rings that children use when they are learning to swim?? Maybe nobody else is as unlucky (or paranoid?) as me about being bumped or knocked?

Tummy bumper?!
I had to laugh when I saw your email, because out in public I always walk with my hands in front of my belly to protect it. My discharge papers told me to avoid crowds, and neither the nurse nor I could imagine why. But the first time I went to a supermarket, I understood--I didn't want anyone getting anywhere near my poor belly. The thought of being squished in a crowd was scary.

Tummy bumper?!
I think a tummy bumper is a great idea! I'm avoiding any places that might be crowded. If I go somewhere, I only go when there will be no crowd. I'm not worried about anything else but the idea of someone bumping into me scares me to death.

Tummy bumper?!
LOL I have found that if it hurts on you, someone is bound to bump it no matter where you are or what you are doing. Just after I got out from my surgery, lol my 6 yr old DH wanted to give me a hug and guess right where she grabbed, you guessed it, lol right around my tummy. A week later my stepdaughter brought her kids over and my step granddaughters wanted to love on grammy, lol they got me again. My dog has a thing about jumping on my poor over extended and sore belly. A bumper would be an awesome idea!

Tummy bumper?!
I feel that way when I go to church! Everyone wants to hug but I don't want them to get too close because I'm afraid they'll hug me too tight and irritate my tummy! My first trip to church (Easter) I waited until the crowds thinned out before I got out of my seat, and people still came up to hug me! I just took the squeezes like a champ and moaned later when I got home!

Tummy bumper?!
Too funny - ok - funny isn't the right word! My cat wants to jump up, my daughter, lying next to me, pushed off of me when she got up! and I feel your pain. I now sleep with a pillow on top of my belly!

Tummy bumper?!
Thanks for your replies. You reminded me, bassndeer, I forgot to mention my two cats too - well, one of them has jumped on me a couple of times in bed but luckily I've had a pillow on top of me so it wasn't too painful. Sounds like I might find a few customers if I can develop the right product - might give me something to do to pass the time. Is it possible to add drawings to posts??? Only joking because I never was very good at art!
Like you tiva, I find I put my hands in front of my tummy when I'm walking anywhere busy, or in the supermarket where I'm likely to get bumped by a trolley. My youngest niece usually gives me a hug but since she came to see me in hospital, she's kept a distance as she's worried about hurting me - aah!

Tummy bumper?!
Hi Helen - I just had to have a look and this has made me laugh! What a brilliant idea. I very proudly went to the supermarket on my own on Friday and filled my trolley too full. I was starting to struggle getting around people and was worried they'd bang my trolley into my stomach. I found myself getting really cross with older people and parents with young children in their trolleys. It was like everyone thought I had to manoeuvre round them and I wanted to scream "I'm not going round you because it will pull my stomach and you might be old or have a baby but I've just had a hysterectomy!" Anyway I didn't I just huffed and puffed like a mad woman! If I'd had a tummy bumper I could have bumped them all out of my way! Ha!
