Re: cervix removal or not?
I got opinions from two different surgeons. Both were offering laparoscopic hysterectomy. One suggested removing the cervix, one recommended leaving it. (Keep in mind that I have no history of abnormal Pap smears, and no other indication to remove the cervix.)
Both doctors came up with good arguments each way. I chose the surgeon who recommended the total hyst (removing the cervix), but ended up with a subtotal (leaving it) after some discussion with him. The deciding factor was basically a quicker recovery time. So far, I have no regrets about my choice.

Re: cervix removal or not?
I am confused about this as well. My doctor informed me that he planned to remove both my uterus and cervix and he would do a TVH. I called his office to clarify the next day and asked if he used laparoscopy and was told that he didn't. If my surgeon does a vaginal hysterectomy, then I am guessing that I won't have the option of keeping my cervix- will I? I want to call his office, but I don't think I will be able to talk to him and don't know if the nurse will be able to answer my questions. A huge part of me wants to keep my cervix, but if I do, I'll have to have an abdominal surgery? Am I right? I was really happy about the fact that I wouldn't have any big scars on my belly. Anybody with any information or experience with this - any input would be appreciated! Thanks!

Re: cervix removal or not?
if youre having a vaginal hysterectomy, your cervix has to be removed. my first dr offered me the same but i didnt want my healthy cervix removed so i got a second opinion with a dr that could do the lsh (first dr wasnt trained to do it) and went with him. i had a very easy recovery and have no regrets. if you want to keep your cervix, you need to talk to your dr about it (call the office and tell the nurse you want to speak to the dr and would appreciate a call back). if he cant offer you the surgery youre interested in, ask him for a referral to a dr who can. good luck!

I also had a laparoscopic hyst (LSH) and kept my cervix and ovaries. I am still very pleased with my hyst results.
I can suggest going to the *Hysterectomy Checkpoints* link at the top of the web site. Click on it and go to the *Pre-op* link and scroll down. It goes over the different types of hysts.
Sending best wishes~

Re: cervix removal or not?
I had suspeced adenomyosis, which resides in the uterus, and since the cervix is a part of the uterus and they didn't know where the adeno was located in the organ, my doc recommended taking the whole thing, cervix and all, to avoid any future problems in residual adenomyosis in the cervix.

Re: cervix removal or not?
Read the post 2 above yours. Only 3% of women get cervical cancer. My husband says there are a lot of nerve endings on the cervix so I am looking into keeping mine.

Re: cervix removal or not?
I had my cervix removed due to abnormal paps, displasia etc. Even though it was a no-brainer to have it removed I still did lots of research. I am very satisfied I made the best decision based on my situation. I'm only 4 days post-op TLH so I can't offer anything else.
Bottom line is you need to do what is best for you based on your instinct and what you find out from your research.
Good luck to all facing this decision!

Re: cervix removal or not?
I am a "new girl on the block" but have been very uplifted with all the wonderful advice and compassion I have read thus far. I am scheduled for a hysterectomy 7/9/09. My MD will use the Davinci method and should be good recovery time. I do have to make the decision to leave or not leave my cervix. Still undecided. My first thought is to remove, especially since I have had so much trouble and everything else has to go. But just worried about the incontinence that could come down the road. Anyone else have advice? Thanks so much for all the encouragement!

Re: cervix removal or not?
I wasn't sure if I should have my cervix removed or not, but opted to have it removed. Glad I did as it had adhesions and chronic cervicitis with immature squamous metaplasia. I believe I would have had to go back later if I had not removed it now. But, we each have to decide for ourseves after talking with our doctors.

Re: cervix removal or not?
Thanks for the info. I have pretty much decided to remove the cervix at this point anyway. I appreciate all the suggestions and experiences from everyone. I can't wait to get this behind me and on the road to recovery. Thanks again.
