Incision is really sore and hard, also have dull vaginal pain - anyone else?
Hello All
I just discovered this website after searching for answers on the internet and found this blog awesome. I have a friend who is helping me w/questions but we are having a different outcome with our post-op recovery so this site has been great for a different perspective. This post will be long as I am giving all of my post-op for the last 16 days.
I had my abdominal hysterectomy on 6/30 through my prior c-section area. The reason for the hysterectomy was an enlarged, prolasped uterus, endo & scar tissue. Luckily my ovaries we able to stay but he took the whole thing (including cervix) and drained cysts on my ovaries. The problem that I have is that due to the prior two c-sections that I had (with 1st and 4th baby, plus 2 tubals) I had aquired a lot of scar tissue. Dr. said that because the uterus was so large and prolasped it had put a great strain in my bladder and colon and the scar tissue had wrapped all around them, with the bladder taking the greatest hit. A sling was not needed but he did say it would take a while for the bladder to heal. Anyway, on to the recovery....
Surgery was on a Tuesday, Wednesday the cath was taken out in the a.m. I remember when I was taken to my room after the surgery that the cath just didn't feel right (I had never had issue when used with c-sections) so it was a relief when it was taken out. Right away I felt like I had to go and only drip, drip. I did pass a little bloody, tissue like thing but nothing more after that. I was also extremely thirsty... loved the ice chips but had no appetite for anything else. The nurses were great but I couldn't wait to get home. They were adament on me doing a BM or passing gas but for the week prior to surgery I really hadn't eaten too much so nothing was there after I did the Fleet before surgery. However, I kept saying that I couldn't pee but it got un-noticed. So, Thursday I was discharged and was happy to go home but was in so much pain in my back (surprisingly to me). I do have a very high pain tolerance but couldn't take it anymore. I hadn't pee'd since they took out the cath on Wed. and by Friday a.m. I was crying like I had never cried before. I finally woke up my husband who called the Dr. and told him about the pain and that I hadn't pee'd since Wed. He told him to take me to the nearest ER for a cath. Luckily, ER took me back right away and put a cath in... I was soooo relieved! The Dr there said that a persons bladder will shut down after 70 cc's and I had over 3300 cc's by the time they were done draining it and the pain in my back was due to it backing up into my kidneys! I left that ER a new person and the pain in my back was gone. I had a follow-up on Tuesday to get the staples out and check the insition. Dr. said scar was healing really nice and told me to ween myself off the cath (I used a plug instead of a bag) that worked and I fully took it out on Thursday. I did 2 more pee's after I took it out then it shut down again! Luckily I ended up in his office instead of ER where he drained it and they showed me how to do it myself. I have been taking Septra since being discharged from hosp. but after the 2nd round of bladder failing he also prescribed Urecholine for spasms. It worked! I have not had any problems with going except for the pain part. From reading other posts it seems to be common. It was been 2 weeks now since the surgery and I thought I would start feeling some relief w/that however I find I am doing breathing techniques for peeing and labor breathing for BM's. But other than that I am physically feeling good. Dr. gave me clearance to do everything except lifting anything more than 10 lbs. I have a 2 story house and he said if I feel good to climb them then do it (slowly). The biggest problem that I have is that I am not much of a TV person and can't sit still. I have cabin fever and was/am doing too much. I stopped all pain meds to keep myself in check and it's helped. I have found though that the incision is really sore and hard since I had the 2nd round of bladder failing (I had a window of about 5 hrs. of intense pressure to pee which I suppose would have put strain on the incision). Is anyone else having this? Also, my vagina has a dull like pain... is anyone else having this also?

Hi (((anewme_09)))
I did not have the same experience that you have had, but I do remember the area around my incision being firmer shortly after my surgery (usually before a bowel movement, or when there was a bit of gas pressure). Vaginal pain can be very common as well during the healing of the cuff. I hope that the rest of your recovery goes smoothly! Please keep us posted as your recovery progresses!

Re: Incision is really sore and hard, also have dull vaginal pain - anyone else?
Thanks.... Actually, the vagina is bothering me more than the incision. I have not had any discharge at all so I am hoping that it is just part of the healing process and not me over doing it. Like I have mentioned, I have a high pain tolerance and healed really quick with my 2 earlier c-sections. I think I am comparing the c-section recovery to the hysterectomy too much and don't realize that I am over doing it.
I live in Arizona and we're at 115 degrees right now. Too hot to walk outside and I am going crazy inside. Kids are home for summer break and I am ready to explode... I have 3 girls... to many hormones to deal with. Though I look fine they don't seem to understand that I need to rest and I can't seem to say no! Any advice would help.... Thanks

I have that dull pain, too. Like I pulled a tampon out right after I put it in. I didn't have a problem with the catheter, though.

We had a recent thread here where women were comparing C-Section recoveries with Hysterectomy recoveries. It was interesting to read about. I think that hands-down, hysterectomy was voted a more trying physical recovery.
You could talk to your doctor about the vaginal discomfort. It took a few months before my ovary woke back up, and this meant drier, more fragile vaginal tissues for me. Beth's description is a good one. Many women describe this feeling as if a tampon that is too dry is inside. I think that it is worth talking to your doctor about it. They could probably suggest something for you.
Take care!

Incision is really sore and hard, also have dull vaginal pain - anyone else?
I just started having this dull ache at my vagina, possibly because of the hormones - -I have noticed that when the bladder is full that around the incision is hard and kinda sore and achy it is a muscle and from all the stretching esp (3300)cc of urine the pressure keeps pushing on the outside skin. Just another annoyance to deal with :O Joy It is such a pleasure with the mystery stiches also because noone can see them and then I feel as if I have to explain why I can't pick small things up. Urrrgh. Hugs and Welcome

Is there a project you could do with your girls...a family scrapbook, jigsaw puzzle, group activity such as learn to crochet, knit, etc?
Have a contest...how many paths to walk through the house?
Maybe consider making christmas gifts this year?
New crafting projects...potholder/coaster looms-my DD made coasters for everyone this past christmas.
My DD (10 yrs) also doesn't understand my need to rest...she wants to have sleepovers with her friends to show them our new house. I just don't feel comfortable with that right now.

Re: Incision is really sore and hard, also have dull vaginal pain - anyone else?
Great ideas ladies... I think this is probably the perfect time to go through all my pictures and sort them out. I had an aunt visit recently from England who had never met my 8 & 5 year olds. Before she left I made her a scrapbook of my family to take back (the kids bonded w/her very quickly and miss her very much). When I gave it to her I saw my Mothers face like "why don't I have one"? So now is a perfect time to go through them and make scrapbooks for Christmas presents.... plus the kids love looking at pictures of themselves.
I think a lot of the problem w/my girls is that they too are feeling the "cabin fever". We have been playing Uno like you won't believe. I don't have any puzzles but they would probably enjoy that also... a mission for hubby.
Thanks for all the feedback
