Upcoming hysterectomy

I'm scheduled for laperscopic total hysterectomy only keeping ovaries. Lots of anxiety but necessary to have done. Have had major pain for over 2 yrs. After 2 useless anal exams under anesthesia due to pelvic /rectal pain and feeling like I was crazy I now feel relieved finding the reason. After 2 yrs I had an exploratory laperoscopy and found fibroids. I have 1 degenerated fibroid blocking part of my bowel which is causing pain. Only reason I function now is due to using the nuva ring. I can't wait to feel normal being not as much pain, normal bowel movements etc. Open to advice and ways to make this an easier process.

Re: pre op

Hi ssadler to HysterSisters!

I am so glad you found this site! Even though this is solving a major pain problem for you, this still can be an overwhelming experience.

As I am sure you know, having a hysterectomy is MAJOR SURGERY. Recovery is different for everyone, but you need to think in terms of weeks and not days. Recovery depends on the surgery type, if there are complications, your age, your health, and a myriad of other unknown factors. You can expect to be tired, as you will have lots of internal healing to do. You will need help around the house with cooking, cleaning, dishes, laundry, shopping, driving, etc. You will need to take time off work - again think weeks and not days.

You may want to read our pre-op page. Here also are 10 Tips for Preparing for Your Hysterectomy and 25 Things to Know Before Your Hysterectomy. I think the most useful item are meals in the freezer, and making sure you have easy breakfasts and lunches on hand.

Above all, know that you are not alone in this. We are here for you, and will be by your side throughout this process.
