Recovery Question ? TAH ?
Hi-
I just got my date for surgery December 9th , 2004. I was told in July that I have Hyperplasia with Atypia , I have always had heavy periods with clotting etc but no real pain or other problems. I was only having a routine yearly Ob/Gyn check-up but with a new Dr . After I told her about the heavy bleeding she decided to do a ultrasound, endometrial biospy and then in Sept a D&C which conmfired hyperplasia aith aptyia.
Anyway my question is I am having a TAH and I have been reading the posts on this board since July and it seems as though so many of the sisters have had this done because of fibriods ... It seems as though the recovery is harder and there is more to the actual surgery because of the fibriods. Is this true? I am hoping that my surgery will be routine hopefully with less complications .... or am I just trying to ease my fear? Please respond and give me some idea about your surgery and recovery.
Thanks

Recovery Question ? TAH ?
I also had hyperplasia w/atypia. Mine was recurrent. I had a LAVH, however, not a TAH.
The reason recovery is longer with TAH is that it is an "open" procedure. An incision is made in the lower abdomen and the uterus is removed thru that incision. With TVH and LAVH, there is no abdominal incision, except for a couple tiny incisions for the scope and trocars for LAVH. I don't think the recovery for TAH would be different for women who had fibroids or for someone who does not; the surgery is pretty much the same.
I am very glad I was able to have a LAVH. I had to find a doc that was very good at LAVH and I'm grateful every day that I found one. Not every doc does LAVH, however, as it takes considerable training and expertise.
If LAVH is an option for you, I'd recommend it. You might want to talk to your doctor about LAVH and discuss whether LAVH would be an option for you.
I wish you well! The relief of having all those atypical cells OUT is wonderful!

Recovery Question ? TAH ?
I had a TAH for fibroids. My dr. does less invasive procedures but because my uterus was size 20 wks.+, we went with the vertical incision TAH.
I have to say, overall, I was very pleased with my recovery. I had visions of being totally incapacitated and wondered how I would go back to work after 8 weeks. This just wasn't the case. That's not to say there wasn't some pain and discomfort. Week three was probably when I felt the worst. I had some bad back pain and was running a fever which made me feel crummy. But, there was never a time during my recovery where I regretted my decision. I was very careful about what I did and followed dr.'s orders about stairs. I took my medications for four weeks straight and cut down to half and then none and didn't have too much discomfort with the incision. I drank lots of water, took walks after dr. cleared it and got plenty of rest/sleep. I'd say at about five weeks I was feeling much better although somewhat fatigued. I went back to work at 7 weeks for 1/2 days and then full-time at 9 weeks. I probably could have gone back a little sooner but wanted to give myself all the time I needed to recover.
