I've been bad

I am scheduled for surgery at 7:30 am tomorrow. I was told to be there by 5:30 and I am so glad to be getting on with this. This weekend I had planned to do last minute cleaning, some ahead of time cooking and just spend some peaceful time. I had intended to only have soft foods on Saturday and lots of rest followed by all clear liquids on Sunday and begin the bowel prep by 1:00 pm.

Instead, I had the busiest weekend! I ended up shopping on Saturday morning and we had to pick my daughter up from school (2 hours round trip). Then, I cleaned the house and had my best friend and her hubby over and we drank beer and ate pizza and played cards until the wee hours. I didn't sleep much. Then my sister-in-law came by (from out of state) and she stayed until 4. We had to drive my daughter back - til 6 and I didn't start my bowel prep until 7:00 pm. I am having a very hard time swallowing all this liquid I am feeling very crampy and sick to my stomach and my head feels very light.

I still have not packed for the hospital or gotten my anesthesia file together for them (very vital I bring this). Also, since I was feeling so light-headed I snuck several of those little mini-quiches this evening - made me feel a little better.

So, I have been very bad this weekend even though I had every good intention. I hope all this is ok and I hope this bowel prep kicks in soon. It sounds all gurgly and churny down there - but right now I feel like bringing it up the other end. Hugs to all! and tell me I'm not that bad.

Re: I've been bad

If you were instructed to have only clear fluids today, please let your doctor and anesthesiologist know you had some solid food today, no matter how little. It's extremely important to follow your pre-op instructions to the letter. If you were instructed not to have solids the day before surgery doing so could cause problems.

Re: I've been bad

Thanks Catherine, I will do so. I just felt horrible with terrible headache and so light-headed I thought I was going to faint. I have Meniere's disease and when I have low blood sugar I get the spins something fierce. It's probably not going to be a big deal to them since I ended up throwing up from the bowel prep - but I will let them know I've been bad. The older I get - the harder these medical procedures seem to be on my body (and mind).

Re: I've been bad

charmane -

Did they tell you to call if you were unable to keep the bowel prep down?

Whenever I've had to do a bowel prep I've always been told that if I can't keep the bowel prep down I need to call.

Please make sure that they know you weren't able to complete the bowel prep. You won't be the first I'm sure but they need to know. also about your Meniere's disease.

Re: I've been bad

They probably told you nothing to eat or drink after midnight, or similar? Don't "be bad" on that one or they could cancel your surgery. Have some juice or jello before that to keep your blood sugar up. Good luck with your surgery.

Re: I've been bad

I will let them know G. My own doctor said she doesn't require a bowel prep for her patients but it is her partner who is lead on my surgery because she is more expert with the scope. My doctor felt the size and shape of the uterus would necessitate a TAH but this other doctor feels we have a good chance for the lapro procedure. My regular doctor said that the bowel prep is in case the bowel is nicked but she has never had that happen. They did not tell me to call if I couldn't complete the prep but I have already thrown up and am back to working on drinking the rest. Thanks for all these HUGS they are very important to me now!

Re: I've been bad

Apart from the eating thing, it sounds like you had a fabulous time which is good for the soul. Tell them about the food but don't feel guilty.
Some ladies don't even do bowel prep, it is the surgeon's choice.

They did and I won't violate that one. It's just the clear liquids today that got to be a problem. I started to get very dizzy and felt like fainting - so I grabbed something soft and small and it really helped immediately. Now, I'm feeling funky again with the bowel prep and it hasn't even kicked in yet. The only thing it is doing is making me throw up and I can hear my stomach gurgling very loudly. Hopefully, it will work soon.

Thanks much - I hope this bowel prep stuff kicks in soon. I am drinking so much gatorade with this powder that it keeps coming back up and choking me - I have a problem with GERD to begin with. I wish I didn't have to do it - my own doctor let me just use over the counter meds instead of the precription stuff because her own husband got very ill with his colonoscopy prep. She said she doesn't want me coming there a big 'ole mess. I appreciate the support and I did have a great time this weekend - it was just "business as usual." I haven't really had the time to think much about he surgery.
