Which Drug Has More Effect For Pain Toradol Or Demoral

I had both after my surgery. I was on a demerol drip for the first 24 hours after my TVH and I didn't hurt at all with that. When that ran out they put me on demerol tablets and the pain was so severe that I also needed Toradol injections. I'm almost at four weeks post-op and I have hardley needed to take any demerol past that first week. I use Toradol injections at home for migraines and that works well for stuff like that but after surgery I would go with demerol over Toradol. But in the end you need to listen to your body. If one doesn't work ask for the other. And if you get Toradol throug your IV ask to have it mixed with saline first and then ask the nurse to push it in very slowly. I burns if it's just a straight shot of Toradol.

Good Luck

Which Drug Has More Effect For Pain Toradol Or Demoral

Drugs effect different people different ways.

Demoral is a narcotic-type pain reliever so it will tend to give you more issues and will constipate you. Also, some people get nauseated from narcotics so they can't take them or need to be very careful when they take them.

Toradol is non-narcotic, and it's kind of like a high-powered ibuprofen. I had it in IV form after my second c-section. They gave it in combination with percodan (another narcotic) and it worked extremely well.

Hospitals (and doctors) vary with what meds they prefer. Good luck to you!

Which Drug Has More Effect For Pain Toradol Or Demoral

I had toradol following a combined kidney and lung surgery and found it didn't really stop the pain. Lung surgery is supposed to be especially painful, though, so maybe that was part of it.

Toradol is an anti-inflammatory, so it does work at the site to reduce the swelling from the trauma of surgery to reduce pain. I'm not sure that it is a pain reliever, per se.

Following my TAH (vertical incision), I was on an IV Demerol pump and had very little pain. Of course, I had very little running memory, either. I told my doc that I wasn't sure if it was a pain reliever or a memory eraser. I couldn't focus on anything like reading but I wasn't bored, either. I think I just sort of drowsed in and out of it.

The main thing you might want to ask your doc and/or anesthesiologist about is getting something in your "mix" that will reduce the excess stomach acid that just seems to go along with surgery. I didn't do that with my first surgery and suffered quite a while post surgery even though I was getting some sort of antacid tablet (sounded like ritalin, but that wasn't what it was, obviously). For my hyst, I asked for something before surgery and had no problem with the dreaded acid. And I don't normally have acid problems. It was totally a surgery thing.

You can also ask for anti-nausea medicine to be added to your "mix" or "cocktail." Most anesthesiologists don't seem to do either antacid or anti-nausea as a matter of course but will if you ask.

I have a history of nausea when taking narcotic pain relievers. Darvoset made me so sick I would rather suffer through the horrable cramps I used to get rather than feel like that.

After my TAVH-BSO I had injections of Demerolin my butt every 4 - 6 hours for the first 24 hours after surgery. I felt little or no pain at all. I did feel sick after the 2nd or 3rd shot and ask for something to help. What ever it was was injected into the IV. It did the trick and I've not felt sick since. After that I have only used Percocet for pain and only need to take one tablet every 5 hours and no nausea.

I would very much prefer demorol and phenergan to toradol. For me toradol works if it's given with a narcotic, but it does nothing for me by itself. Demorol makes me really sick by itself but I don't know of any Dr's that I have ever worked with that's ever given it without the phenergan. Demorol makes almost every body sick. It's just one of the side effects of most narcotics.
Best of luck.

1dring - Was the medicine that they gave you Reglan? It's for nausea and helps alot. It can also be given by injection. It's like the phenergan, just works in a different way.

Yes, Tammy, the drug they gave me to help with the awful acid was Reglan (I wasn't really nauseous after I got off the initial 10 seconds worth of morphine). Thank you. I can't ever remember it's name. Now that I've seen it in print, maybe I can get it into long term.

It did help with the acid but I had to take it very often. It's possible that I was given Reglan because that's the only thing that was on the doc's orders. So, maybe it wasn't the best use of it, but it worked better than nothing for acid issues.

So, I think I took Prilosec before the next surgery (hyst) in addition to the "cocktail" and that worked MUCH better. Only a hint a acid.

Thanks again for the Reglan name.
