Total abdominal hysterectomy - ugly lumpy incision site

Hi all
I had a TAH 3 weeks ago, and have a 6 inch horizontal incision. The problem is that I now have a large fatty lumpy 'flap' just above the incision site, with one side being worse then the other. It's not hard, and doesn't hurt. It looks a bit like it's like it because of the way it's been stitched together? I don't have a massive stomach, and you can see the lump through my underwear. Has anyone else had this problem, and if so does it go down, or am I stuck with this for life?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Re: TAH - ugly lumpy incision site

I too am at my 3 week recovery after a SAH and have the same "flap" you describe above my horizontal incision. My belly was so big before with uterine fibroids so I believe this is why I now have this extra flab. The centre of mine is still quite sore on the outer skin though, above and below my incision. I wouldn't be too worried about it as it's still early. I'm actually looking forward to when I can get back to the gym to work it off!

Re: TAH - ugly lumpy incision site

I had a pooch over the incision as well for a while. It went down after maybe two months or so. I think it was a combination of post-surgical swelling and just the excess skin having to relax from having had a boulder behind it. Currently, my stomach is flat as a pancake, so it should go down for you as well.

Oh I do hope so! I'm worrying that it won't and I'll be self conscious about it. Fingers crossed eh. Thanks for your replies.
