CONFUSED about recovery time for TVH vs LAVH

Ok, I read the differences between a TVH and a LAVH on this site. In the TVH the recovery time is listed as 6-8 weeks, while in the LAVH it is listed as 4-6 weeks. Is this a typo? I would think having incisions in your tummy would require a longer amount of recovery than not?

Could anyone give me some battle stories who've had a LAVH???

Thanks!

Sara

You read right....most times recovery for a TAV is 6-8 wks and a LAV is 4-6 wks. They give you 2 extra wks for the abdominal incission.

CONFUSED about recovery time for TVH vs LAVH

Hi,

Whoops! I think there's some confusion as to the terminology: (there's no such thing as a TAV!)

TAH and SAH (abdominal hysterectomy) usually requires a 6 to 8 week recovery.

TVH (vaginal hysterectomy), LAVH (laproscopic hysterectomy), and most other less invasive surgeries require a 4 to 6 week recovery.

An LSH (laparoscopic supracervical hysterectomy), the less invasive surgery of all, requires a 2 to 4 week surgery.

It's important to remember too, that even though the abdominal surgery has a large incision in the abdomen that has to heal and the others don't, the internal work for all of the different procedures is the same.

Hope this helps clear up the confusion.

s,

Lisa

CONFUSED about recovery time for TVH vs LAVH

eseca,
I had a LAVH on 11/24 and had a very quick recovery time. I think quicker than most. I was home the day after my surgery and off pain meds completely (even OTC) the next morning. The first week for me was pretty much laying around. By the 3rd week I was feeling really good. I went back to work two days shy of 4 weeks post op. I am now 9 weeks and have returned to my normal life completely. Don't be surprised or disappointed if you heal slower. If you learn only one thing from this forum it's that EVERYONE heals at a different pace. Your body will let you know what you can and can't do. Don't try to compete or compare! I was very lucky. I wish you all the best in your upcoming surgery and if you have any questions at all feel free to ask. Take care.
