New symptoms one year after hysterectomy.
Ok ladies.....I am really beginning to question my descision for the partial hysterectomy. I am 36 and I am glad that my uterus is gone cause I feel better, but I am discovering that things like arthritis is getting worse and hot flashes are crazy. It was 25 degress here the other day and I wanted to go outside without my coat. My hands, wrists, ankles, feet and lower back hurt so bad all day that I want to just cry. Ibuprofen does not work anymore. My grandmother had a very bad form of arthritis and I am afraid I might have it. Could the partial hysterectomy cause things to happen faster?? Please someone comment and let me know. I am going to go to the doctor and see if they will do blood work to find out for sure. Thanks so much!!

Re: New symptoms one year after hysterectomy.
I am not as far along from having a hyst but I know that my mom, her dad and her grandmother have (or had) rheumatoid arthritis and I really dont think it has anything to do with a hysterectomy. I think if it runs in your family, you are at greater risk of having it. I am hoping and praying that i dont get it or the severity that they were afflicted, but it's a valid concern regardless if I had the hysterectomy or not.
The hot flashes....I really dont know anything about. I havent had them. I kept my ovaries, though I know its still a possibility that they will fail in the future or natural menopause set in. I would ask your dr if there is anything they can do to help ease your flashes.
Good luck!

Re: New symptoms one year after hysterectomy.
I don't think having a hysterectomy causes arthritis but it usually presents itself in middle age, I know my monthly cycle causes arthritis flares each month but so far hasn't been worse from the hysterectomy itself.....there are lots of books at Chapters and Amazon on living Healthy with arthritis that are very helpful, diet, excercise, herbs, alternative and medical therapies....got diagnosed when i was 30 after lots of years of symptoms and being proactive has really helped both my body and state of mind. And yes, my dad, half sister and gramma have it, genetic, but 5 of my siblings don't have it. All the best to you!

Re: New symptoms one year after hysterectomy.
I was at the doctors office yesterday for removal of my staples. Upon arrival to the office I learned that my doc had gone off on medical leave. (doctors aren`t supposed to get sick. lol) Anyway, he had another doc taking over for him. I had a TAH myself, but, that doc asked if I was on HRT. My doc suggested that "I wait and see" l told him no and explained that. He told me that if not on HRT that health issues would show up a lot sooner in life. I agree that arthritus is hereditary, but, you might want to talk to your doc about this. It could be linked. good luck.

Re: New symptoms one year after hysterectomy.
I definatley think that it brings it on ....I am 14 months post op...TAH and I went on HRT and feel so much better...but I was starting with the arthrius and within a month after my surgery, it was getting worse, my skin was drying up, my hair was falling out, I just do not believe a woman is meant to live her life with out hormone...I believe God knew what woman needed, we we need to replace hormones somehow...

Re: New symptoms one year after hysterectomy.
All of your symptoms, even the hot flashes, can be signs of RA, which sounds like what you are saying your family has. A friend of mine, who still has her uterus and ovaries, thought she was going through peri-menopause, and went to the dr about it, and they ran a full blood panel, and she found out she has RA, and the how flashes are form that. I would suggest getting a full blood panel done and see what the doc says.

Re: New symptoms one year after hysterectomy.
I had a similar experience. My joint pain returned about 6 months after my hyst (I kept my ovaries). After about a year of searching, my doctor found out I have autoimmune thyroiditis (Hashimoto's). Many of my symptoms, including the horrible period cramps, were finally explained. Now that I have found my sweet spot of thyroid medications I am finally pain-free. Hashimoto's can only be diagnosed with an Antibody blood test. Joint pain can also be caused by low vitamin D. Please get your doctor to test for as many autoimmune problems as he/she can for your joint pain. It could be RA, but it also could be many other of these diseases which cause inflammatory complexes to build up in your joints. Good luck!

Re: New symptoms one year after hysterectomy.
For me, the arthritis probably presented first before the TVH. I've knitted and crocheted for 40 years, have played the piano since I was 8, have my B. Music with a minor in keyboard instruments, and worked for a while typesetting at a small local newspaper. I got tenosynovitis after major surgery four years ago from all the knitting I did post-op and actually had custom-made splints for my right hand for about six months.
My TVH was this past May, and when I went back to school this fall (after losing 50 pounds since April 1st), my hands got incredibly sore. I saw my ortho who I'd seen for my right hand, and he took new films. He showed me that I had NO cartilage in either thumb at the carpo-metacarpal joint (at the trapezium) from osteoarthritis and referred me to his partner who specializes in hands. I also found out from my Dad that Mom had arthritis in her hands and hand arthritis tends to run in families. I had an LRTI on November 10, and I've been released out of my left splint (other than in vulnerable situations and whenever I go outside), and my right hand is scheduled for three weeks from tomorrow.
From what I've read and been told, Sierra Jazz is exactly right -- it probably doesn't bring it on, but both generally present in middle age. Risk factors for osteoarthritis (as I was told) are being female, forty or older, and above weight.

New symptoms one year after hysterectomy.
Good morning lilsis74:
I am coming upon my 1 yr anniversary in February. And there seems to be some truth to your question. I had a total hysterectomy and opted out on the HRT. But I am having sum serious issues with one leg and I don't know if I can say it is arthritis. I know that I didn't have this issues before the surgery. So I have started taking vitamin D for my bones. My flashes are not that bad but I am looking at alternatives to the HRT now. Good luck but there maybe some truth to your question.

Re: New symptoms one year after hysterectomy.
Hoffdna- I too have Hashimotos and still at times struggle with symptoms etc. as illness, stress, etc. are factors that make it worse. Yes on the Vitamin D for joint pain, too.
