Husband here looking for help
Hello, my wife had laparoscopic hysterectomy surgery in July. She had some complications due to some adhesions in the area from previous hernia repairs. To make a long story short, she ended up with three intra-abdominal abscesses from an infection due to bowel leakage where the surgery perforated one of her bowels.
The Dr. in radiology drained the three abscesses and installed drain lines. At home, thru a picc line, she recieved a daily dosage of an antibiotic medicine called Invanz. After a few weeks, one abscess closed up and then shortly after the second abscess closed up with just one left. Things were looking promising when the third one came down to the size of a dime, so they deemed it good enough to remove the last drain line and go to oral antibiotics.
Unfortunately, a week later she got red in the area, and we went back to the hospital and the ultrasound showed that this abscess increased in size. So they drained it and reinstalled a drain line again. 2 weeks later, an ultrasound showed it has not decreased in size, so the oral antibiotics have not worked. The Dr changed to a stronger antibiotic and another 2 weeks have passed and we are due for an ultrasound to see how the abscess is doing. We have our doubts that it has shrunk because it is still draining around 12-20 mls a day.
The infection specialist Dr she has been seeing is not giving us much hope and is now indicating that we will need to get another opinion. As you can imagine, my wife is at the end of her rope in wanting to heal from this. We have three kids and the past 4 months have been rough.
Has anyone dealt with an abdominal abscess like this? I have scoured the net for information and there's just not much out there. The abscess is not tied to another problem such as appendix or a leaking bowel, this we have confirmed. It's just being very stubborn to the oral medicine she has been given. I'm thinking she needs the IV medicine again since it did take care of the other two abscesses and almost healed the third one.
Any advice is greatly appreciated.
Thank you
