First day amnesia

Just wondering if anyone else had 1st day amnesia?

My surgery was @ noon. I was in recovery by 2. In my room by 3:30. Once in my room I apparently had many conversations with my boyfriend, nurses and the surgeon. I even ordered and ate some food. However, I dont have a single memory of anything after being wheeled into op room. My first memory is nt until 1 am the next day.

Dont know how I can have lucid conversations but not remember anything? Has this happened to anyone else?

Re: First day amnesia

I also apparently had a conversation with the surgeon and my husband while in recovery. I have no memory of it at all. Like you, the last thing I remember is being wheeled into the OR.

I think it's fairly normal when you've had general anesthetic. I know my husband has no memory of some things after he had surgery.

Re: First day amnesia

Same here. Apparently the surgeon, his resident and the nurse had conversations with me in the recovery room. I remember nothing of all of that. My first very fuzzy and memory snippet is being in my room and the nurse that was setting up the PCA pump asked me about my pain level. My family was there and I have a couple of other vague and fuzzy memories but that was it. My family said I was complaining steadily of the pain and pushing my PCA button constantly. I have no recollection of any of that. My memory really starts the next day when I woke up. General anesthesia really does a number on me and loss of memory is part of it.

Re: First day amnesia

That was quick ... my LAVH took almost 4 hours ... and unfortunately I remember my first day as being in a lot of pain and having lots of nausea (it was a very rough first 12 to 24 hours.

General anesthesia is powerful stuff and it can linger in your body for days. I'm day # 3 post-op and I still get vivid and very weird dreams every time I doze off (another anesthesia side effect.)

Hopefuly you didn't make any kind of promisses that now you must keep

Re: First day amnesia

Apparently I lucked out and made not commitments in my altered state...although my boyfriend is getting a lot of mileage out of kidding me about some of the things I said :-).

I guess I should consider myself lucky that I dont remember anything because that also means I dont remember the pain :-)
