Re: Dog walk

It's not the stairs that are the problem. It's that if the dogs pull on the leash, that's likely to provide more stress than your abs can handle at this point. Most of us were told not to lift 10 lbs after surgery. That also means don't push or pull 10 lbs. So unless you own a pair of teacup chihuahuas, someone else needs to walk the dogs.

Re: Dog walk

I'm 3 weeks post op and my recovery is going well. Starting today will be dog sitting for a week. Looking forward to the companionship and walking the dog who is 12 lbs. But he's an older dog (6 years), so doesn't go too far or too fast.

I'll be mindful of the pulling though.

I agree with SurprisedInNB about walking the dogs. I have two 90# German shepherds; the older one is 12 years old, and has arthritis, and the younger one is 5 years old, and prone to unpredictable behaviour. My brother took care of the walking, as well as feeding and poop patrol, but I could still spend time with them; I'd park myself in a lawn chair in the backyard, while they'd go and "do their duty," or splash around in our kiddie pool, occasionally bringing a ball for me to throw to them. As for climbing stairs to get out, you need to take that slowly and carefully, which you can't do if you're also handling the dogs. If you can't get anyone in your family to help, then a professional dog sitter might be another alternative. Give your buddies a big hug, and best wishes for your continued recovery!

I agree with the others. It depends on your dog's size and temperament. I have two 30 pound hound dogs who love to chase squirrels and chipmunks, so they would not hesitate to pull me. I didn't want to take the chance that they would pull me any which way, which could cause me to twist and hurt myself. If you can have someone walk the dog, it might be nice to walk along with them. Otherwise, I would steer clear for a while until your doc releases you from the twisting, pulling, etc.

We have a Great Pyrenees and although I'm nearly 4 months out - I still have DH or Dear kiddos take her on the leash, she's taken off and pulled my parts before surgery so I'm being extra cautious! Be well and safe... pets are the best!

Re: Ok to walk Dogs 10 days post hysterectomy?

I have 2 Swedish valhund x staffies. They are not big dogs, about 10kg each (sorry, not sure what that is in pounds). No way I would've walked them before getting clearance from Dr at 6 week post op visit. They love to run and pull on the leash and would have definitely destroyed the surgery.

I know we are all keen to get back to all our normal activities after surgery as soon as we can, but it is more important to listen to our bodies and let our bodies time to heal properly. I am 5 months post op (TAH). Allow others to help you at this very early stage of your healing process.
