Brachial plexus stretch injury during hysterectomy
I had my LAVD on 12/10/07 and woke up after a 3 hour procedure unable to use my right arm. It took visits to several doctors (neurologists and neurosurgeons) to find out that this was a stretch injury to my brachial plexus (nerve center in right side of chest) due to the way I was positioned/tied-down in surgery. It has been 15 weeks and I'm still in occupational therapy 3 times/week and have pain and weakness in my upper right arm and neck and some numbness and tingling in 3 of my fingers. I was on short-term disability for 12 weeks and probably should still be, but I came back to work. Has anyone ever heard of this happening before?
