Exactly what is a vaginal cuff?

Dear Sister es,

I feel so stupid for asking this, maybe I should've been paying closer attention, but what is a vaginal cuff? Does everyone get during after their hyster? How will I know if I have one other than asking my Dr? (I have my 6 wk check-up next Monday)

think of a vaginal cuff as...a tube sock (were the toes are)..i'm not sure if everyone gets one...depends on if you keep your cervix. I have a vaginal cuff (i don't have a cervix) they have to sew your vagina shut.

Does everyone who has a total hysterectomy get a vaginal cuff? I have had uterus, cervix tubes and ovaries removed. I'm assuming I have a cuff?

Very interesting article! I was really able to picture it. AnnRuthie, you would really think me a ditz cause when you tried to explain it to me, I was picturing it upside down and thinking,"WHAT???" My brains are still scrambled so please bear with me, did they get removed, too? (I have wondered!) Thanks for the feedback everyone!

If you had your cervix removed than you should have one. My doctor explained it as a tube of toothpaste, nozzle side down. The top of the vagina, the cuff end, is the end that is crimped off at the factory. If your toothpaste isn't crimped you are going to have messy issues, same thing with your vagina.....leave it open and problems will arise!!
