Get up and move...just my opinion...

Hello. I haven't made a lot of posts on here, but I would like to share my opinion (some may disagree). I am 5 weeks post op from tah. I have heard from everyone numerous times that they can't believe how well I've done. I am not bragging but would like to just throw this out there...yes, we need lots of rest; yes, we have lots of restrictions(especially lifting) that MUST be followed; however, I am a firm believer that you must get up and move. I have had 2 c-sections in the past and now this tah..never (so far) have I had any issues and I generally bounce right back. I believe it's soo necessary to get up and move no matter how uncomfortable. I'm not suggesting that you get up and run, power walk or anything of that sort. What I am saying is rest, rest, rest...but when your awake, gently walk around your house as much as your body can handle. Get up and get that glass of water you need. I know many will disagree, but I strongly believe its how and why I bounce back quickly using no pain meds for any of the surgeries upon leaving hospital. I am not super woman or looking for praise..I just see a lot of women still having pain with walking, or fatigue at several weeks post op and wonder if we don't "gently remind our bodies that we are in control", if that's why the re-coop time is much longer for some. I'm not trying to step on toes, go against any dr order, just stating this might be something to think about. Much love to all my hystersisters, praying for the best to all

Re: Get up and move...just my opinion...

I agree that movement is important. However, it is also important to remember that each person's healing journey is unique.

I too had minimal discomfort after surgery. But, at 5 months post-op still have my tired days, and I live a very active lifestyle.

The more I get moving, the stronger I get, but if I over do it, my body reports in for role call.

Glad you are feeling chipper! Remember to let your body heal. :-)

Re: Get up and move...just my opinion...

I don't think anyone would disagree with you that you need to move. The Dr said that when I left the hospital. I too walked around the house and when i was feeling that I could some very short walks outside to the mailbox or a couple of houses down and back. I think where the concern is is when some of our sisters want to walk a 1/2 mile 1 wk post op and that in my opinion is too unrealistic.

Each of us do heal uniquely as each of us have had unique surgeries to whatever our specific issues were. Although my tag says DvTh it is still deceiving because I had other repairs done while they were in there. I have spent quite a bit of time on this site. Especially days when I wasn't up to par. The ladies who pushed it, the ladies who listened to their mind instead of their bodies are ultimately the ones who are having the issues. That's what I have noticed and I do believe that age also has something to do with it too. This was MAJOR surgery and although we're not saying turn in to a lazpot, you have to take it easy to allow your body to heal becuase in its opinion something devastating has happened to it. This is not like having a baby because the body is built to understand that, c-section or not. I had no idea this surgery would wipe me out like this, I was a fulltime worker, fulltime student with a 4.0 cumulutative gpa, 4 kids, 1 husband, 1 dog, so not lazy in no respect. But, I listened to my Dr and I listened to what the ladies said on here and that is why I think my recovery in my lady parts has really been uneventful.

So sisters, take it easy, walk when you can, drink lots of water, no lifting, vacuuming and all the other no no's that we know we can't do. But ultimately listen to your body and when it says sit down, SIT DOWN. Your later down the road recovered self will thank you!

Re: Get up and move...just my opinion...

I agree that movement is important also, but I believe the most important thing to remember is that we all heal at different rates. What works for one may not work for someone else.

I too have had a fairly easy recovery. I'm at 7 weeks now. I increased my walking everyday. I listen to my body and it surely let me know when I've overdone it. On Monday I walked 5 miles. I never had to take anything stronger than 600mg motrin for the 1st couple of weeks postop, but that's me. I have a high tolerance for pain.

Although we've all had hysterectomies, some surgeries were more invasive than others, therefore making their recovery a little more difficult.

I'm very thankful and feel very blessed that some of us had fairly easy recoveries, myself included, but I also have much compassion for those that haven't.
Prayerfully we will all get to where we need to be.

Re: Get up and move...just my opinion...

I was in great shape (lifted weights) before my TAH and felt I had to move around. I did. I gently walked, got my own food, drinks, showered own my own from the first day I got home. I had no complications either.

Yes, it was painful, yes I was so swollen, sore and tender....................for about 5 freaking months.

I personally feel that my activities slowed my healing. I never did anything overly exerting. I followed all of the rules to the letter.

Until I decided to completely STOP doing anything, I finally started feeling better. That meant light laundry, feeding the cat, cleaning out dishwasher, light cooking, light walking.

I'm no wuss and have a high tolerance for pain but I look back now and realize I should have laid on butt for an entire 3-4 months.

just throwing in my opinion from my personal experience.

Re: Get up and move...just my opinion...

It is good to move around, but only as much as your body can handle. I have had a surgery each year since 2007 except 09. Last year my doctor told me that after each surgery it will take me longer to recover. That is no joke.

Each person and each BODY is different. I don't think there is anything wrong with sharing your opinion, especially since you made it clear you didn't want to step on anyone's toes, but not everyone if fortunate enough physically, or medically to have those options.
