Fibroid Size/Any Mathematicians?

HI, Was told I have an 8 by 7 cm uterine fibroid, and was wondering if anyone had any idea how this would compare in size as to months/weeks pregnant? My doctor just gave me the actual size in centimeters, but I notice a lot of you describing the sizes of your fibroids in weeks/months pregnant size. Any help would be appreciated....

Fibroid Size/Any Mathematicians?

I'm not a mathematician, but I am a nurse practitioner very used to converting metric to non-metric!

7 cm x 8 cm is about 2 3/4 x 3 1/8 inch fibroid. In pseudo-gestational size, it's equivalent to about 13 to 14 weeks.

Fibroid Size/Any Mathematicians?

My visit to the dr when she found the fibroids was interesting because I told her that I felt like I was about 4-5 months pregnant. She had ordered an ultra sound and told me that I was right on the money-5 months. I really didn't have a clue because I am unable to have children, so I guess I now have a little understanding of it and I don't like the weight gain I have. The fibroids were the size of baseballs in March...I can't imagine how big they are now. I can't put on a pair of pants!

I'm glad she told me by months, but I think I would have asked her in comparison to what.

My surgery is 9/28--can't wait.

Wish you well .

Somewhat Confused Too!

I was told that I have 2 fibroids. A large one seen in the lower uterine segment measuring 9x7.7cm and a smaller one found in the anterior body measuring 4.0x3.2cm.

The doctor said the large fibroid was approximately the size of a large cantaloupe and the smaller one about the size of a naval orange. I look and feel like I am about 6 to 7 months pregnant.

I had the displeasure of having a Hysteroscopy done to see if there were any polyps because of excessive bleeding and spotting after my normal cycle. During this time a biopsy was performed. The doctor stated that the large fibroid was grossly distorted and appears to have wrapped around my bladder. Due to it laying on the bladder I am constantly running to the little girls room and have frequent urges to urinate.

On September 8th I will find out the results of the biopsy and the date for surgery will be set. Truthfully, I can't wait to get this over with. Going to ask the doctor to do me a favor and do a lipo and tummy tuck at the same time so I can at least look beautiful after dealing with some much discomfort and pain

I hope the surgery goes well for you and will have you in my prayers and in my thoughts.

Fibroid Size/Any Mathematicians?

My fibroid is 12cmx8cm, plus I have a whole collection of smaller ones having gulfed up my entire uterus. I haven't been able to fit into my clothes for some time now. My question is, can your gyn surgeon perform a tummy tuck and lipo etc or do you have to arrange for a plastic surgeon to be present at your surgery. I sure could use a tummy tuck. I'd be nice to see my knees again. Once the fibroids have been removed, do we shrink down back to our normal sizes again?

Fibroid Size/Any Mathematicians?

I go to the dr on 9/9 and I was going to ask her: 1) ultra sound to tell the size of these fibroids and, 2) tummy tuck question, too. My husband and I discussed it and he was supportive of whatever I wanted (also he doesn't like me being overweight, like I do?). I also read that it's not always good to do both at the same time, so it's dr/patient I guess.

I feel like my grandmother wearing dresses all the time, except they are cooler and comfortable right now. My belly has been in the way for too long and I find myself leaning forward alot from the weight..anybody else getting that? Can't keep my back up straight for good posture for long periods of time so I make sure I alternate sitting, walking and laying down (napping).

Boy, our surgery dates won't get here soon enough. Hang in there.
Praying for all of you.

Fibroid Size/Any Mathematicians?

In my case, the gyn surgeon will do the hyst and a ps will do the panniculectomy. I am not aware of gyn surgeons who are skilled in the other field to do any sort of tt procedure.

Fibroid Size/Any Mathematicians?

I posted this in another thread and I thought it would be helpful here as well. Can't remember where I got this, but I had a copy of the text in an e-mail so here goes:

Q: I am confused as to the way the size of a uterus is compared to the size of a pregnant uterus at different months. Could you give me some way to understand this?

A: According to Obstetricians/Gynecologists, the estimation of fibroid size (based on the model of the size of a uterus in pregnancy) goes like this:

(1) 12 weeks - just up to the level of the pubic bone
(2) 16 weeks - 4 fingerbreadths above the pubic bone
(3) 18 weeks - 2 fingerbreadths below the navel
(4) 20 weeks - at the navel
(5) 24 weeks - 1 fingerbreadth above the navel
(6) 28 weeks - 3 fingerbreadths above the navel

There is one problem with this model, i.e., the top of a Fibroid Uterus can be very irregular, whereas the top of a Pregnant Uterus is usually smooth and uniform. Although it complicates this method of "sizing" fibroids, it is still useful and the most comon way Gynecologists record uterine size.

There are a number of other ways that Gynecologists use to describe fibroid size - often using a comparison to commonly used items. The following "Bestiary" of items might help visualization by translation into actual measurement!

Average Sizes of Items
Pea - 1cm (3/8")
Walnut - 3cm (1 3/16")
Lemon (diameter) - 5.5cm (2 3/16")
Apple/Pear - 7.5cm (3")
Orange - 9cm (3 1/2")
Grapefruit - 11.5cm (4 1/2")
