Lots of questions?
I just found out this week that I am terribly anemic once again. So, after a visit to my regular Dr. and my Gyn man they helped me decide that a hysterectomy was in order! Yikes! I feel like I have been thrown into this thing without enough time to really decide lots of things about it.
I know I have fibroid tumors and they are causing me to have severe periods, plus backaches and terrible headaches. I also know that I always end up anemic because of it and that is not good.
I first of all want to know the pros and cons of keeping my ovaries as opposed to taking them out, knowin very little about hormone therapy. I have heard that there may be risks of having to take them out later, which would mean another surgery. I have also heard references to cancer from hormone therapy, please correct me if I am on the wrong track here.
Also, if I keep my ovaries will I still have a period?
I will only have help for 10 days after the surgery will I need someone else to come in and help out? I have three kids!
My husband is gone from home for 20 days at a time.
Are there any other alternative methods of treatment that you know of that don't require surgery?
My Gyn man although very sweet is just really rather matter of fact about all this and he is not giving me any other options, I guess that is what bothers me most.
Any and all replies will be heeded. Thanks so much,
Jeanie G.

Lots of questions?
I just wanted to invite you to also join us in the h.s. chat room. This room is great for real time suport and advice from those who have been there or are there now.
I am a 28 year old mother of 2 . I had my hyst 1-22-01 and kept my overys. after the hyst even with the overys you will not have a period. If you keep your cervix some ppl have mini periods.(i kept bolth and no mini periods) i was too animic and now after the hyst and all healed you would not belive how great I feel now. I have more energy and a new life.
AS far as you keeping your overys this is your choice but i chose to keep what not broken and have done great.I feel if I have to have my overys removed later big deal the time I did not have to take any HTR is great.( I realy dont for see any reason to take them out later for me) You realy need to talk to your dr about this some older ladies like to take overys so they go right in to menopause and no delay in the hrt. I would sugest to look around this site for more answers and come to chat and ask any questions you have. hop[e this helped ya.

Lots of questions?
Hi, Jeanie! Welcome to HysterSisters! This is a great place to get answers and support and comfort! Yes, the decision to have a hyst. is a difficult one to make, and it is major surgery. However, if you are getting anemic every month from blood loss, it probably will improve your general health and energy levels to have no more periods! You didn't say how old you are, but if you are in your 40's and getting close to menopause, you might think about having your ovaries removed also. The risks for ovarian cancer (besides family history) are early age at beginning menstruation, first baby after age 30, infertility, and fertility hormone treatments (especially for more than 12 cycles). I was borderline for cancer risk, but since I thought I might get a few more years out of my ovaries without HRT, I wanted to keep at least one ovary if it looked healthy. However, I left the final decision to my dr.-- after he could see the ovaries during surgery. Neither one looked very healthy (cysts and atropy) and probably were barely functioning, so he removed both. Now I am happy that I don't have to worry about ovarian cancer or future surgery for ovarian problems. If you keep your ovaries, you won't have periods, but you still will probably ovulate and have fluctuations in hormone levels until menopause. There is some trial and error involved in finding the right type and dosage of estrogen after either natural or surgical menopause, but your dr. will work with you to find the one that makes you feel best. As far as having help at home after a hyst., I think 10 days would be fine if your kids aren't real young. My 3 boys were 16,13, & 10 so they pretty much took care of themselves and my husband helped with chores in the evenings. You won't be able to do much of anything (only short walks and very light activities) for the first 2 weeks; and no heavy lifting, vacuuming, or more strenuous activity for 6-8 weeks, so you might want to hire someone to clean house for you. You can make a list of questions for your dr. next time you see him, and hopefully he will have time to discuss things more in depth. Hugs and best wishes for a healthier future!

Lots of questions?
I found out in Aug. I had a huge fibroid tumor. I bleed severly for 6 weeks. Never had any problems before that. I was severly anemic and had a dangerously low blood level. I took slowfe 3 times a day and megace to try and stop the bleeding. I did this for a month to build back up because I had to have a hysterectomy as soon as possible. I had it done Sept 10th. It was not as bad as I expected. I havd never had any tpe of surgery in my life. The nice thing was my bestfriend is a surg tech at the hospital so she was in the or with me until I was asleep.
