Anxiety attacks
Paris
I have posted about a drug reaction I had with an anti-nausea drug I recieved. It was not the normal swelling/hives reaction, it was a psychotic reaction. After that horrible experience, I began to have severe anxiety and panic attacks. The irony of the situation was that I would not seek medical help for those, because altho my anxiety broadened to almost any fear, but my biggest fear was of unknown meds. So I had to find a way to manage this or else I felt I'd lose my mind. Well, one night I was starting to have another attack and finally faced it head on. I told the attack to bring it on! Give me all you got, let all the bad things I fear start! Suddenly, a wave of peace came over me, I calmed and the panic went away. I remember crying and praying and laughing and thanking God. From that moment on, when I felt one start to come on, I'd And I've never had another full force attack.
I understand all of your fears and the anxiety. I also believe that the difference today is that I don't allow mine to control me. I suggest taking measures that these other ladies have mentioned to be proactive and put yourself in control of what you can control.
I even have a list of what meds I will take, to carry with me. If it is not on the list, I am demanding to be consulted about the medicine and its effects before I will take anything new. Its the reverse of an allergy list, instead of what I can't take, its what I will. The only exception of course is in an emergency situation.
I know this is long, but one more thing I want to remind you of. If you wake in extreme pain, you can get help for it. Keep reminding yourself that this too shall pass, and its not a permanent situation. Be sure you have informed everyone dealing with you of your fears and they will do everything they can to make you comfortable.
I hope all my rambling has helped. The other thing I do is simply laugh laugh and laugh some more. Laughter is life's shock absorber. If you can't find anything to laugh at, msg me on here, I'll bet I can show you a few thangs!

My surgery is 1/11 and terrified...
Boy, Charity--you sound so much like me!! I am really concerned about the effects of medication. In fact, before my surgery I went to the hospital where I'd successfully had an endoscopic exam (they sort of put you out for that). I got the list of meds they gave me and took it with me to surgery--handing it to the anesthesiologist and TELLING him that I knew those were "safe."
After surgery, I refused all pain meds for fear of a bad reaction. The pain finally got to me 12 hours later and I allowed demerol and phenergan, both of which I'd had 30 years earlier and I knew they agreed with me (if they'd offered that to me first, I would have taken it--but they offered me newer drugs that I didn't know about!).
I am SOOOOO choosy about medications. It's good to know there are others like me.
And I had a long talk with God before my surgery. He set me straight!

My surgery is 1/11 and terrified...
Hi Parisflygirl,
My surgery is also 1/11, and I'm also terrified. It's normal to be scared when having any type of surgery. I also have some of the same fears as you. I was suppose to donate my blood 2wks before my surgery but there was a mix up and now it's not going to happen because of my surgery date being so close. I'm anemic and codeine makes me very nauseous. Since I don't want to heave after having abdominal surgery I'm going to be sure to voice this very LOUDLY at my pre-op. Remember to let the nurses at pre-op know all of your concerns. You will be in my prayers. GOOD LUCK!
Jennifer

My surgery is 1/11 and terrified...
Certain meds make me sick. Yes, speak with all the nurses, anesthesiologists, nurse anesthetists, doctors, etc. beforehand. I even put all my feelings in a typed note which I printed in a big font and in bold. I handed to the doctors. Make the note short and to the point.

My surgery is 1/11 and terrified...
Hello, My surgery is also on 1/11 and I am soooo scared. I am not as afraid of the surgery as I am the aftermath.( PAIN ) I have no pain tolerance. I had my pre op visit on the 2nd and watched a video, signed papers and had blood drawn and now tomorrow I have to have a chest x ray done, mamagram(sp sorry) and a ekg done. All these tests make the nervousness even worse. I wish every one good luck who are ladies in waiting. and I hope to see all of you on afterwards when feeling up to it. Also hope everyone feels better after this..
WISH everyone a great big
And I will be thinking of you all.

My surgery is 1/11 and terrified...
Hi! My surgery is on the 16th and I know what you are going through about being scared. I was rushed to ICU two and 1/2 weeks ago where I received 5 units of blood. My counts were 17 as to the normal 40. I go to my pre-op on 10th. I know that people have fears about spiders, leaving the house, and things like that- mine is of DOCTORS!! Please keep in contact. My thouhts are with you, DV

Tweety
What kind of video did they have you watch?
I wish I could help you all over the nervousness! Really--the fear of the unknown is worse than the surgery, the pain, etc.!
As for pain--they have GOOD meds now. I only took pain meds for a day or so and then tapered down to tylenol or motrin, whatever I had handy at home. If you need medication, ASK THE NURSES! They will help you!
