How DARE he! Abbie, dear, you have got to get another job. Eight years with a company (with NO benefits) is terrible!

You must be good at your work if your boss is soooooo lost without you!

Count your blessings, Abbie, and get a resume together. I'm sure there are laws to help you--there must be! Good luck, honey, and DO NOT let anyone decide when you can come back to work.

People like your boss should learn about karma. You get what you give. The seeds you sow, you know?!! Too bad he hasn't suffered from something like, say, kidney stones--then I think he'd be a little bit more sympathetic.

God bless.

What about state disability insurance? Calif has state disability insurance that would kick in. Plus, if you get yourself FIRED (DON'T QUIT!!!) then you can get unemployment benefits. This may sound bad, but my dad doesn't have any retirement money. So......he gets himself a little sales job that has medical insurance and works 6 months, then screws up, and gets fired. Then he qualifies for cobra (pay for the companies medical insurance himself) and unemployment for 6 months. A little time to rest, vacation, travel and back to looking for another job. Crazy old man, but he's happy.

Good Luck - what a lousy time to be worrying about $

yikes...first priority is to you and your physical and emotional well being. if you want to update your resume, do it. if you don't, don't. i do believe, however, that there is another place for you that will appreciate you. good luck, great thinking on covering your finances in the way that you have. great to hear of a supportive dh. there are great resources for resume writing on the web as well as at your local library.

What a jerk! I'd say to look up the Americans With Disabilities Act, but that job doesn't sound worth it. Eight years and no benefits...Ok, that can happen with a small company, but if they can't provide that, then they **** well ought to be more lenient about other stuff. Five days? Guy has zero clue.

Get that resume out there!

(((Abbie)))

Working for small companies has good and bad points. Unfortunately this is one of the bad. And even if your company had enough employees to qualify for FMLA, that is unpaid time. It's main goal is so people can take medical time off and not get fired.

What I'm reading is he's only going to pay you for 5 days (1 work week) and the rest is unpaid time? Your employer can't insist you return to work before your DR has released you to return.

Do you enjoy your work? And your employer? No one likes feeling unappreciated though. Maybe he will learn to appreciate you while you're out, or maybe you'll decide you appreciate not being in that environment and will take this as a sign it's time to move on.

Best wishes.

I feel your frustration. Your boss sounds like an ungrateful JERK. Maybe when you are gone for 7 weeks he'll realize what an asset you are to the company although some people are too pig-headed and stubborn to know a good thing when they see it.

If you're up for it, maybe use the last week of your recovery to interview for a company who will respect and appreciate you. You deserve that!
