Surgical Menopause because of TAH/BSO
I am scheduled for a TAH/BSO on 6/24. I am 44 years old. I have been told that I will go into surgical menopause. How painfiul is that? I have been told that becuase it is not coming on naturally, that I will be hit hard. My doctor said that she would see how I handle it. And if need be, put me on hormones. I do have a breast cancer risk. Both my mother and sister had breast cancer.

Surgical Menopause because of TAH/BSO
Confused321,
I'm having my TAH/BSO on Monday and my doctor said that he would actually be putting me on the estrogen patch in the recovery room, so I didn't have any problems. He said that the surgical menopause can be a big wake up for women. He doesn't want his patients to have to go through that unless they either can't take hormones, or don't want to. Maybe you should voice your concerns to your doctor. If you aren't keeping your ovaries, then what I've been told is there is no wait and see. You are going to have menopause.
Good luck with things and remember, it's not the doctor's body, it's YOUR body !!!

I also forgot to add that I have the same breast cancer risk, but my family's breast cancer was not estrogen based.

Surgical Menopause because of TAH/BSO
Hi Confused,
My hormone levels were already on their way down when I had my TAV/BSO in March. I think everyone reacts differently. Surgical Menopause has been a pain for me but bearable. I sometimes go to another message board (FORCE), and many women there seem to cruise through surgical menopause with few effects. Other people are miserable.
My doctor won't put me on hrt because of a BC risk; the cells were too small to determine whether it was estrogen receptive or not. Another doctor I asked said the same thing. I figure I could always keep asking until I find someone who says "yes," but I'd rather not risk it.
Good luck,
Margaret

Surgical Menopause because of TAH/BSO
I am 51 and so far am not having horrible symptoms due to surgical menopause. I was very anxious about it, but it's been fine without hormones.

Surgical Menopause because of TAH/BSO
I am 48 and since my surgery I have been fine, I too was nervous about "sudden menopause" and I really dont want to take any hrt because I have endometriosis, but the only thing I have is a little night sweat, but nothing like I have to change my clothes or anything, its really not a bother...everything else is the same,
just wait and see, if the symptoms really bother you then discuss your options with your doctor...

Surgical Menopause because of TAH/BSO
Hi confused321!
Your question is a good one. I had my TAH/BSO over five years ago at the age of 50. I was still having regular periods at the time...I didn't even feel peri-menopausal. After my surgery, because I was well within the typical "natural menopause" age, I decided that wanted to "wait and see" what surgical menopause symptoms I experienced, instead of assuming I would be hit hard and immediately going on HRT. As it turned out, being suddenly "hormone-free" didn't turn out well for me. I will spare you the long saga and sordid details, but suffice it to say that at six weeks post-op I was so "out of it" mentally that I couldn't even find my gyn's office in the medical building even though I had been there twice in the previous two months.
I went on HRT at that point and haven't been sorry for even a second that I did.
It surprised me to learn that, based on what my family physician told me and from reading posts here on the site for five years, some women in the exact same circumstances experience virtually no surgical menopause symptoms at all. Taking HRT doesn't even cross their mind! It's amazing how different we all are. So, if I had it to do over again, I would still proceed the same way.
I'm sending positive thoughts your way for a successful surgery and uneventful recovery.
s,

Surgical Menopause because of TAH/BSO
Confused321,
First of all, great logon name. If you are confused now...just wait until after surgery - lol. Had a TAH/BSO on 3/26. Could not go on HRT & have been dealing with flashes. I am taking Remifemin which is basically black cohash. It has helped a bit but what I find most helpful is watching what I eat & trying to avoid foods that trigger the flashes (spicy foods, caffiene, white breads, pastas) I have to say some days are better than others. I went back to work on Monday & have been so exhausted. My mood swings are getting better - at least I think so - lol. Overall its not been easy, but compared to what I was going through in the past I'll take it. Best of luck to you!

Surgical Menopause because of TAH/BSO
I've had hot flashes and a bit of anxiety, but it hasn't bothered me all that much. I'll be 50 next month and was having regular periods up until a month before my hysterectomy. My doctor generally prescribes HRT only when the symptoms are severe.
