Walk a 5K almost 8 weeks post hysterectomy?

Davinci assisted total vaginal hysterectomy and oopherectomy. 46 years old.

First - let me say that I'm not a runner or even all that into fitness. For exercise I generally walk - though not consistently. But when I do, I could do 3 miles without any problem.

Here's the thing. I'm going on a Disney Cruise, and they offer a 5K on there island in the Bahamas. I'd love to walk it just for the experience and the cool medal

In all my planning, it failed to occur to me that I was going to be post-hysterectomy.

My recovery has been pretty good - started to really feel much better around day 12 or so. After 3 weeks - last week - I felt good enough to go to work (I work part time on my feet) and haven't had any issues to speak of.

I know nobody can tell me to do it or not, but for the ladies who are into fitness, when did you start exercising again? Would a 3 mile walk 8 weeks out be out of line?

Thanks!!

Re: Walk a 5K almost 8 weeks out?

I can't speak for you - but I'm 4 weeks post-op and I'm walking between 3-5 miles daily. I started walking daily at about 2 weeks post-op, and have increased my mileage every few days. So for me - no problem.

Start walking now, consistently, and see how you do in the next few weeks!

I was walking 3 miles at about 2 weeks. But if you want to do it, you really should start walking regularly, gradually increasing your distance now, give yourself time to increase your stamina before you go. Good luck!

Re: Walk a 5K almost 8 weeks out?

I was little slower than coughy16 to get started, but by four weeks I could walk six miles on hilly trails. :-)

As others have said, you should get started walking now if you haven't already so that you can gradually increase your distance and stamina.

One thing that worked for me was that I had goals. I had to be able to walk a mile and back on flat ground at 13 days to get to a local clinic to have my staples removed. In order to get to my post-op appt at four weeks, I had to walk two miles to the bus station including a steep hill, then another mile from my destination station to my doc's office - and then do it all in reverse.

Having goals helped keep me moving. Maybe having the 5K to look forward to will do the same for you? :-)

Agree with previous posts. Should be no issues, start building up now. I was walking 7 miles daily by 4 weeks and started Zumba classes at 5 weeks, all cleared by doc. No negative impact at all. Diff op mind you, I had a TAH BSO.

Have a fab trip...
