Will a Hysterectomy help me??

Hi, I'm 37 years old. I've had two c-sections, tubal ligation and novasure ablation. I had the ablation in May 2015 due to debilitating periods. In October 2016 I started with lower back pain that has spread now to pelvis, hips, flank and thighs. I'm also nauseated all the time and urinating more frequently. I started with my general practitioner thinking it was a UTI but when urine was normal, she ran further blood tests which in turn referred me to a rheumatologist because of a high ESR. Come to find out it was an error and a total wasted 3-4 weeks. In November I then went to my gynecologist who did a pelvic exam and vaginal ultrasound. All he said was that he saw a few blood pockets on my uterine wall. He told me to go see my GI and if everything came back normal to come back and see him. In December I saw my GI doctor who ended up doing abdomen xray, abdominal and pelvic CT scan and just yesterday had a hida scan to check for gallbladder. My GI doctor thinks it's adenomyosis and my gynecologist thinks it's a GI problem; however, he said it's my decision on having a hysterectomy, he just can't promise it'll make me feel better. I'm in so much pain all the time I cry myself to sleep at night. I feel like people just think I'm a sissy or even crazy but I know how I feel and I just don't feel myself and haven't since October. I started a new job in September and have missed a lot of work so that guilt kills me too. I feel bad for my husband and my kids because I don't feel good all the time and it's getting depressing. I called my gynecologist today to see when I could have hysterectomy, the nurse has to do pre cert, etc. I'm still waiting on hida scan results but I really don't think it's gallbladder. I just wanted to go ahead and get the ball rolling on hysterectomy. I guess if there's even a small chance it could help me I'm willing to try. He did say I am a candidate for laparoscopic hysterectomy but I don't know what all he'll take out or what should be taken out. Any comments or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
So here is a list of all of my symptoms:
started spotting in October
passed a few blood clots in December
nausea
back pain
hip pain
flank pain
pelvin pain
thigh pain (sometimes)
abdominal pain
faigue
loss of appetite mostly though sometimes I feel very hungry
constipation
cramps
bloating

Re: Will a Hysterectomy help me??

Hysterectomy seems like a very dramatic choice without a conclusive diagnosis that your uterus is the problem. Did you get a colonoscopy? Did you get an MRI (only way to diagnose adenomyosis without a pathology test of the tissue - ultrasound is worthless).

It would be terrible to have a hysterectomy for no reason and still have all the symptoms.

Definitely get a second opinion from another gynecologist and a second opinion from another gastroenterologist! Good luck!

Re: Will a Hysterectomy help me??

Definitely seek out some second opinions. A hysterectomy might help a lot, or it might not. I had LAVH after suffering from endometriosis, PMDD, etc. The operation may have helped, but I'm not very far post-op right now. It's possible the endometriosis will still cause some abdominal discomfort, and I still have ovaries, so there will still be hormone surges, but I'm looking forward to skipping the cramps that made me double over and want to throw up, and caused more than a little missed work.

My doctor and I considered hormonal options (didn't go so well), IUD (not a good candidate), ablation (nope!), and then settled on hysterectomy. The lap option allowed them to look at my ovaries and look for abdominal issues (endometriosis found - told them so!). My cervix was removed (there appear to be strong opinions for or against, but now I will never risk cervical cancer), ovaries remain.

It's a major surgical procedure, and not to be taken lightly, but I can definitely understand your desperation to get a solution. Here's another thought - will it bother you to not be able to have more children? And if it will bother you, will it bother you more than the troubles you're having right now? Based on that and a second opinion, you should be able to make a better-informed decision.

Re: Will a Hysterectomy help me??

Thank y'all for the responses. I am definitely done having children, had a tubal ligation in 2006. I'm currently going through a failed ablation. I endure period like cramping, back and pelvic pain daily. Most of the women I've talked to are so pleased with the outcome and it has helped them greatly. (these are women with same symptoms as me) My husband and I are going to my pre op appointment a week from today so we'll get to ask a lot of more questions then. And yes I've had a colonoscopy in the last 5 years but my GI doesn't thinks it's necessary because it was normal and everything else has come back normal. I guess I feel like what can taking my uterus out hurt....in my mind, it's like it can't get any worse. I can't live like this anymore. It's a back and fourth thought everyday. I'll keep praying about it and hopefully make the best decision.

Will a Hysterectomy help me??

It's common after ablation for pockets of blood to pool in the uterus. Often this blood cannot escape because the cervix doesn't open after ablation. It builds up and is extremely painful.

It was reported by another on this board that a hysteroscopic D&C was performed to remove those pockets of pooled blood. She reported tremendous pain relief and posted of her experience.

I know it was on the options board but don't know the poster's handle. You may be able to search using keywords.

Personally I would ask for the least invasive alternative to start vs. jumping into a drastic life changing surgery. I had a hysteroscopic D&C after having a UFE and it really helped me.

It's still surgery but not nearly as invasive. You might want to ask your doctor about trapped blood after ablation.
