Right decision to hysto?

I've had abnormal paps for several years, with abnormal levels increasing over time to now be CIN III. Somewhere in all of that, it was determined that I do have HPV. A laproscopy was done to check out things due to pain I was having, mostly during intercourse. Last year, a cone biopsy was done. The next pap came back with the same abnormal results as before. So, the doc said that the next step is hysto. I don't disagree with him, but I want to make sure that it's the right decision. Based on research I've done, and the progression of things, it seems the only other option would be to sit around and wait for it to eventually become cancer. Am I on the right track, or is there more I should be looking at?

Re: Right decision to hysto?

Hi, CIN 3 is not an uncommon dx and many women are treated with a LEEP or cryo and don't have any ongoing problems. As I understand it's only a small percentage of those that need to go so far as to have a hysterectomy to deal with it. Since your doctor now is recommending this surgery, you may want to seek a 2nd opinion from a gyn/onc.

Many ladies who have had CIN 3 (dysplasia) or cervical cancer post in the the Cancer Concerns forum and you are most welcomed to post your questions re CIN III there. I'd also suggest you do a search for CIN III in this fourm as well as the CC forum to read past posts. Pls keep us posted.

Re: Right decision to hysto?

peggiesue - We did a cone biopsy, which I understand to be basically the same as LEEP (obviously different procedures, but similar results). The next PAP came back again as CIN III, which is why the doc is now recommending hysto. He initally did say that we could do another biopsy, and wait it out, but I feel like that's just delaying the inevitable.

I'm 36, so I know I'm still young, but I have no intention of having children. I have a step-daughter right now that blesses my life so much, but hubby and I are looking forward to retirement as soon as she's out of high school.

Also, I'm being seen at the VA hospital about 1.5 hours away and have to take a full day off work to do the biopsies and paps and follow-up appts. I was laid off recently, so one the bright side, I now can take care of this without missing work.

I don't know that they have a gyn/onc on staff there, and I think my doc is just a regular gyn. I can research and see if there are any available in other hospitals in the state.

Thanks for guiding me to the CC forum also. There is so much info on this sire, and I was able to find some more info and read stories of women who have gone through similar issues. It's comforting to know that there are others out there and to hear their stories.
