Do I have to have a hysterectomy?
ok, so i have been told twice to do the tah..fibroids and heavy periods my whole life. my daughter (20) has inherited the heavy periods, which i got from my mom! Anyway, in my 20s several d&cs, ablation last September, 2.5 cm fibroid submucosal could not be dissected, but surgeon thought worth a try. My appendix ruptured in my 20s, leaving adhesions from my pelvis to my navel, and wrapping the right tube and ovary so tight, they needed to be removed a couple years later..No bleeding after the ablation for several months, now heavy and fresh..nurse told me to take 600 mg of ibuprofen, which has slowed it now for a few hours...Dr. says come in and do the tah within 6 weeks...so, What if I just say NOOOO! will i bleed to death? can I do Megace or ibuprofen to keep it at bay? i am 54, menopause has to be close!!!

((rushhome))
Did you ask your doctor what would happen if you do not have a hysterectomy in 6 weeks? Did you ask about other options such as the Megace or another progestin or progesterone? Do you have a second opinion scheduled? Is your doctor keeping an eye on your hemoglobin? Have you had your hormone levels checked to see how close menopause might be?
There are alternatives for treating fibroids besides an ablation or hysterectomy. Possibly you would be a candidate for a myomectomy or UAE. You might want to take some time to read through our many Fibroid Resources to learn more about them and more about treating them.

Re: Do I have to have a hysterectomy?
thanks! This is my second opinion, first told me a year ago. This ob wanted to try ablation first. She says she does not like to use megace, no explanation..hemoglobin bounces, I keep 325 mg on hand..and hormones do not show ready for menopause, but she said that could be due to the continued bleeding also? first time, prior to ablation, she seemed very open..now, a year later, very cold..just basically "you are out of options, you need to do this or chance bleeding out". nice

can you try cyklokapron for the bleeding? for the *most* part, (but not completely) it has helped me tremendously. without it I would probably have bled to death by now! i take that for about 5 days in the heaviest of my 8 day cycle, and an ibuprofen with it, every 6-8 hours. you are so close to menopause, it would be nice to avoid surgery!

never heard of that one, I will look it up. Her nurse actually told me to take 600 mg of ibuprofen every six hours to slow it yesterday, and it worked enough to make it almost bearable!

Re: Do I have to have a hysterectomy?
How about Lupron. It can stop the bleeding and shrink fibroids, maybe enough to get you to menopause. Lupron can be tough but not as bad as a TAH. Also there are other types of hysters that don't require a big incision and the long recovery time but your adhesions may be a problem. Like mentioned above there is lots of info here to help you learn about alternatives.
Take your time making your decision. Why is there a six week time table? Doc going on vacation??

Re: Do I have to have a hysterectomy?
I first went to this ob/surgeon a year ago after another ob/surgeon told me I needed a hsyterectomy within a couple weeks! She said I would never see menopause, fibroids would keep me bleeding. I told her I needed a second, and went to another systems clinic. This surgeon read over the history, re ran all the pelvic ultra sounds etc, and said we could try a Novasure and she would try to dissect out the largest fibroid. First she did another procedure under a mild anesthetic, removing some polyps, and possibly part of the 2.5 cm fibroid. When I went back a couple weeks ago, she was so abrupt I was almost speechless! Maybe my age, 54, ? Don't know..the first round she told me a hysterectomy should be a last resort, because of the adhesions and past history. I have both the bikini and the full slice her down the middle from past surgeries. I guess I will look for another physician. This past week the bleeding has gotten back to the scary volume which put me in the emergency room last time..

Re: Do I have to have a hysterectomy?
Hi!
I don't know if you are planning on taking hrt if you hit menopause. I was told that since I had a submucosal fibroid that hrt would not be an option. If you are interested in the hormones you might ask your doctor.
As it was, the bleeding wouldn't stop and I had andeno also so I wound up having the hyster.
If you have to have surgery you might look into an LSH which is what I had. That way you only have tiny scars. It might not be an option but just thought I would mention it.
Whatever you decide I hope all go smoothly for you!

Re: Do I have to have a hysterectomy?
never thought about the hrt yet, i am cruising these pages trying to give myself a crash course! I have been told must be a abdominal because of the past surgeries, and adhesions..the surgeon will almost certainly be cutting through many adhesions. My fibroid is submucosal, why, if it is gone, would it affect hrt?
