My hysterectomy is in two weeks and I want to say thank you to all you wonderful women for then support and encouragement you offer here.

My weird qesstion of the day.........
I am having a hysterectomy due to severe endometriosis. (TAH)
I also have diverticulitis. Will a hysterctomy help with this pain as well...............or am I only dreaming??!!

thanks, stardaisy

A hysterectomy can be a wonderful cure for some problems but, unfortunately, I don't think diverticulitis is one of them.

I'm sure your hyster will help you feel much better in other ways, though!

Unforunately, a hyst is not a cure for endometriosis either.

If you have endo on your bowel walls and your surgeon is going to clean that up a bit, you might find some relief as the bowel won't be as irritated from the outside. But no, a hyst is not a cure for diverticulitis.

You may want to discuss your concerns with your doctor more and ask if any additional procedures at the time of your hyst, with a colo-rectal surgeon for instance, would be benefitial for you.

weird question of the day

(((stardaisy))) Are you sure you didn't mean to say you have diverticulosis rather than diverticulitis? Diverticulosis is a chronic condition; diverticulitis is an acute infection that can be life-threatening if not treated promptly.

I've had both. I didn't know I had diverticulosis prior to my hysterectomy; I must have had it for years, but it didn't cause much pain. About a month post hyst, I developed diverticulitis; then got it again a year later. It was cured when they removed most of my colon -- unfortunately, that is the only way to guarantee it won't recur, and it's not something I'd recommend unless you absolutely have to do it.

Good luck with your surgery!

weird question of the day

OOps, yes, It's diverticulosis..............I get them mixed up!

It has really been hurting lately. But then my periods hurt horribly, too. So, atleast getting rid of one of the pains is a start.

I am getting nervous as the date gets closer, but trying to stay strong!

Today is an ultrasound to see if I will keep my ovaries or not...........

I have had diverticulosis for almost 30 years. I've had a few attacks of diverticulitis, but antibiotics helped cure the infection. If you just have diverticulosis and not the infection be sure to stay on a high fiber diet. Have 25 to 30 grams of fiber a day. Also, drink lot of water (at least 8-10 glasses a day). This should keep your colon clean and help prevent an attack of diverticulitis. As far as having the hysterectomy cure the condition, I think it is a separate condition. Stay well.
