1 month post hysterectomy: A big belly that seems to get worse after surgery

I had a c section in 1996. I have always had a bit of weight around the middle. So now that I have had my surgery and my last day for dressing was yesterday, wednesday I am feeling really uncomfortable with the big extra overlay that I would like to call a pouch. It is still tender to touch and I feel a lot of pulling and cannot lay on my side. The incision at bikini line although confirmed closed, it still feels as if open, when I check, it seems okay. When can I start wearing a girdle.or binder? I am to report for a histology report on the 3rd may at the clinic. This is the time when they examine you aND look to see that you are healing well.

Re: A big belly that seems to get worse after surgery

I found that if I lay on my side I tuck a soft throw in and under me. My tummy isn't huge but the extra support stops the pulling and gets me comfy. I also had to go out and buy some granny support underwear as my regular bikini undies sat exactly in my incision. I just got my staples out today and the steri strips feel a lot more secure. Hugs to you!!

Wear an ab binder. It will hold you in & better balance the bloat weight so it wont feel like the belly or organs are weighing you down. It reminds us to stand straight, helps the back a bit. If your Dr hasnt given you one, then medical supply stores carry them or online at hystersyster store. What you are experiencing is called a swelly belly & it manges to stick around for some time.

I wore ab binder daily to week 8, but not at night. I tried go without it, but back on to week 10. Then i would just wear it when exercising or here & there.. Some people dont like them, others do, some people wear them 24/7.
