Surprise! I need to have 4 surgeries at once.

Have any of you had more then the hysterectomy scheduled at once? I went to the Dr. thinking my pain was a hemmeroid and found out I have a prolapsed uterus, prolapsed bladder, a fistula(tear) and a bulge in my vaginal/anal wall.
they want to do the hysterectomy, a bladder sling and remove part of my intestines.
The dr wants to do all the surgeries at once. I am worried.these seem like 4 pretty big surgeries to do all at the same time. does anyone have any thoughts?

Added to all my worries, I have a pre existing condition that makes anestesia difficult, and down right life threatening.
needless to say, I am scared.

Re: Surprise! I need to have 4 surgeries at once.

Hi joyday!

I am so sorry you are going through all of this. Four surgeries?? Yikes!

I have heard of some of those surgeries being combined. It might be better scar tissue-wise to do it all at once ... Just a guess.

Maybe some of the other women who have had something similar will see this post and respond.

Also talk to your anesthesiologist about your concerns regarding surgery. There may be a different drug they can use.

Re: Surprise! I need to have 4 surgeries at once.

I can see why you are scared! Having four procedures at once seems like a lot but in reality it happens all of the time if someone is hurt and requires multiple repairs from a car accident or something.

If you can do everything at once I may mean a longer recovery but you do it a at once vs 2-3 surgeries and double or triple the recovery time, time of of work and the like.

I had a prolapsed bladder and had it repaired alone with a tubal clamp at the same time. I am glad that I did it that way because it was simply easier in the long run.

Everything will be fine I am sure but if you don't want to have everything done at once ask your doctor what the pros and cons are of doing it both ways. He may have thoughts that we won't think of.

Re: Surprise! I need to have 4 surgeries at once.

Hi there! I am having a bunch too!! Partial hysterctomy, entercele repair, rectocele repair, cystocele repair and then he is tacking it all up to my sacrum. From all i have researched,I would prefer to get it all done at once, and with a job, only one disability claim and one recovery period. Good luck!! Did they schedule? Mine is 2/18.

Re: Surprise! I need to have 4 surgeries at once.

i can understand ur worries and anxieties, i'm also going in for 4 surgeries in 1 which r hysterectomy, oopherectomy, as well as bowel and bladder surgery......i reason why they prob want to do all at the same time is so that they dont have to book u in again at a later date to have the other surgeries done and then that way u wont have to go back in to hospital to have repeat abdominal surgery......yes u may be in more pain after and it may take a little bit longer to recover (but yet again it may not).......good luck with it all and i hope it all goes well for u

Re: Surprise! I need to have 4 surgeries at once.

Definitely better to do it all at once. I had several things done during my total hysterectomy. It is still the same recovery time. It cost less. It is less stress on your body. Less scaring which means less chance for adhesions. You probably won't even noticed they did all at once. I am glad they did them all at once. Now I can get on with my life and not worry about having to plan for more surgeries.

Re: Surprise! I need to have 4 surgeries at once.

I too have a pre-existing medical condition that makes anaesthesia high risk. My specialist says that given the risk he only wants to operate once; it therefore makes sense to do all the work in one surgery.
Talk to your anaesthetist about the possibility of doing it under a spinal with a lighter GA.
I wish you well; it is very scary going into this with a condition that could result in life threatening complications.

Re: Surprise! I need to have 4 surgeries at once.

I am having 3 procedures done this Thursday. TVH, Bilateral Salpingo, & a TVTO. In other words, total hysterectomy, both ovaries and a tension free vaginal tape. I am having a spinal procedure with the guarantee of also being put to sleep so I don't hear what is going on. The recovery is suppose to go better with a spinal rather than a general anesthesia. I wanted all 3 done at the same time as the recovery is the same and I wanted to make sure I did not have to have surgery later on for one of these other issues. I have a cyst on one of my ovaries but decided to have both out, and slight bladder issues. I am looking at this as a all-in-one procedure.

Good luck with your procedure and it really is the best to have it all done at once, if possible. At least it was for me.
