Strange delayed senses surrounding incision

Hey Ladies!

Can't call this a real complaint but definitely a strange observation. Noticing that as my tummy pain diminishes there's a lapse in time before the real feeling is coming back to my skin.

I'm now 10 days post-op SAH (bikini-cut leaving ovaries/cervix). At first my whole stomach down to pelvis was tender with a large region below navel absolutely numb. Then I've noticed a layered feeling when I lightly massage within 1 inch below or above incision. Feeling the pressure of my touch, without pain but can't say my skin is actually reacting to the feel of my fingers. WEIRD.

DH says maybe it's the gradual recovery from the trauma of the pushing/tugging/stretching or whatever went down in the OR when I was counting zzzzz's.

Is anyone else feeling the same?

Many nerves are damaged during surgery ~ especially with the abdominal incision. Ladies experience anything from tenderness, to a "sunburn" sensation to numbness. As the nerves regenerate, you can expect all kinds of weird and wonderful sensations!

Have you found our <link> Post-Op Page yet? It's packed with information, including a couple of articles on the subject.

My surgery was in 2005 and the whole area, around the incision, still feels odd with certain areas still being numb. Hopefully, however, you'll find it all gradually improves, although this is likely to take months, not weeks or days.

Sending all good wishes for a smooth recovery!

Easy: it's not the same kind of nerve endings that respond to ligt touch and deep pressure, that's why! Can't really explain the difference in scientific terms, as I studied this 24 years ago (already???), but it explains the funny feelings. The numbness will fade with time: nerves grow back quite slowly, but they usually do!

Anyways, no worry, it's weird indeed, but completely normal.

Yep, I have the same feeling around all 5 of my incisions, some worse than others.

Thanks Ladies,

At least now I know it's normal. Oops didn't think to do a search for that. Should have never underestimated this site or thought that my experience is so different.

Re: Strange delayed senses surrounding incision

I had an appendectomy 5 years ago. it was an open incision, the entire bottom right quadrant of my stomach is still "numb". i had a lap in august 2009 and since then the skin of my left thigh is numb, it was starting to get better but now since this surgery it's back to where it was before.

Yep, nerves. I had an LSH. I was having some "stinging" sensations over one incision. My Dr, gave me a numbing shot as the nerves were growing back together. A month later, when the shot wore off, I felt normal again.
