1 week to go and getting a bit freaked out!
Hello! I will be having a Da Vinci TLH BSO March 8th. After having 2 c-sections, I am not terribly worried about the surgery, but I am kind of anxious about the instant menopause. Is it immediate? How "intense" is it? How long will it last? And is there anything I can do now to prepare for it? I believe I will be on Estratest afterwards, but not sure if they will start me on this right after the surgery or if I will have to wait. The other part of this that has be concerned is that we will be going on Spring Break 3 weeks post-op, driving from Ohio to Charleston, SC with a 4 & 5 year old, and my husband to camp in our camper for a week-am I going to make their lives and mine miserable? And what about my co-workers, I am planning on returning to work after 1 week. I know there is a lot going on here, but any help, suggestions, support would be extremely appreciated! So happy that I found this website, it has been a wealth of information!

I kept my ovaries so I can't speak to your menopause concerns. Perhaps posting a thread on the menopause forum would be helpful.
As for the camping trip: Yikes! There is no way I could have managed that! I spent the whole first week post op in a haze where I couldn't do more than get myself to the bathroom and occasionally shower. I returned to my desk job at 8 weeks and found that extremely challenging. Have you discussed your plans with your doctor?

Hi V - I had a TLH-BSO on Jan 27 and the only sign I've had so far of surgical menopause is some vaginal dryness. I know everyone's experience with this is different - My doc said some women do go immediately into menopause the same day, and I 've seen posts from women who notice it weeks/months later. My mom had a TAH at 45 and didn't have any menopausal signs for 1.5 yrs later (I'm hoping that's hereditary haha). You can ask your doctor if s/he plans to put you on HRT immediately after the surgery - I can only do the vaginal cream b/c of prior ER+ breast cancer.
There is no way on earth I could have gone back to work in a week - I just started back gradually this week (5th week) and it's been a struggle (but getting better each day). And my job is sitting in a comfy chair and nothing strenuous. Also no way I could have traveled, much less gone to stay in a camper, with young children, at the 3 week mark. Your body really, really needs time to heal - People often think laparascopis/da vinci is "no big deal" and you should be up and back to normal within days - That is total hogwash, it's MAJOR surgery with a lot of organs taken out, leaving other organs to settle, inscisions in and outside to heal, loss of energy, etc. I don't mean to be a debbie downer and hopefully you can do whatever you plan, but even the smoothest recovery really takes weeks.
Wishing you the best and remember to pamper the

Re: 1 week to go and getting a bit freaked out!
Thank you for the responses Carolinagrl42 and sugarandspice! I have spoken to my doctor about the Spring Break plans, actually his families is the same time and he is going away. I had my surgery scheduled for April 11th, but it was moved up due to the extreme pain that I have been in. He thought that a week was pushing it, but still do-able. Mine is also a desk job, and my co-workers have been very helpful. As most of them are post-menopausal, they have been alleviating some fears, but all of theirs was natural and not surgical. As for the camping trip-I am hoping that since the drive down will be spent sleeping, and we are visiting some family that will probably take over with the kids, that it won't be too bad. I guess if it gets too bad, since I am in the travel industry, I can jump on a plane and head home. I'm not sure that is going to be any better though.
