Seems I was a wee bit careless in my description. Of course they are two very separate organs, each with a membrane. However, it was a surgeon who told me that the membrane does get peeled in order to separate things and nerves are sometimes taken with it. Hence my interpretation that things are somewhat "stuck" together.
